Over the past month I have been having problems booting my new comp.I have a gigabyte ga 8IPE 1000 m/b and a Seagate Barracuda hdd.
I regularly had to boot twice because my system was freezing with the message "Boot read error"
Seagate advised me to update my bios. I could not get the latest bios to install. I got messages "Incorrect memory count"
Then I found out that my m/b was not a ga 8IPE 1000, but a GA 8IPE 1000 (rev 2). I found an updated bios, installed it, AND problem solved !!!
My only complaint is that no one told me about (rev 2). There is also a (REV 3). Looking through current advts I can't find a single ref to any revisions. The m/b manual doesn't mention it. Even the invoice I got makes no ref to it.
Apparantly the rev, and the updated bios, were to allow SATA hard drives.
Lesson learned. Watch out for revisions when buying a M/B.

Quote from your post in a different thread yesterday:

"all the packaging & paperwork go in the rubbish bin."

Maybe you threw it away..?

(Sorry - couldn't resist that)

It pays to run Aida or Sysoft Sandra to find out what your rev number and bios version is before doing anything as bios updates are specific and fussy beasties. Some manufacturers have little utilities which will ID the board and bios (string) for you.

Thats the problem with being on the "cutting edge "so to speak.

Probably why some call it the "bleeding edge" of technology.
