View Full Version : Pic Thumbnails for the Web - Possible Apache2 plugin?

Greetings,

Ive really been using my Digital Camera a lot, and a lot of people I know are asking for copies of the pictures...

So rather than manually moving the ones my friends want to my Server PC (Which runs Apache2 amongst other things), I'd rather keep the lot on there, and use some sort of app to thumnail the images, and display them on a web-page.

Is there anything (For Linux preferrably seeing as there's not a Doze box in the house) that will allow me to do something along these lines?

Many thanks

Chill.

Hey Chill,

I too am about to embark on finding a plugin that'd work with Apache2 for generating thumbnails but I haven't started yet.

You could read more into the GD library which has been pointed out to me which could do what you want but I believe it has a little coding involved and probably not the simplest methods.

You could look at Apache::Gallery and also Apache::AutoIndex, although these may not be supported in Apache2.

If you do discover something useful would be much appreciated in your findings.

Cheers,

Hi Noel,

Im about to emerge a few apps, Apache::Gallery included, so I'll see how it goes.

Does anybody else have any ideas?

Cheers

Well I feel like a bit of a dumbass, but here's a short story:

I wanted to make an image Gallery right.
The logical thing to do would be to search for "Gallery", right?

I ran:
emerge search gallery

This is what I came up with:
http://mkgallery.sourceforge.net/

Im compiling it now, I'll let you know how I get on. If you give it a shot yourself, let me know how you do :-)

You'll need Imagemagick as it mentions on the site, so you may have to hunt down packages for that for your distro also.

Cheers

Well.. I dont know of a Doze app that'll do what Im after... I dont want to view it on MY PC, I want a website to be generated which will give me thumbnails of all the images in a Folder.

Aside from that, any app you tell me of is kinda useless seeing as there's not a Doze box in the house, and I'm not going to be running it from work either :p

sigh.

was a joke.

However,i used one the other day called extreme thumbnail generator, that gave the results in html, made a very spiffy little web page,i was quite impressed,.....apart from 1/8 of the screen displaying a msg that the msg doesnt exsist on the paid for version.

Okay folks, try:

http://chillingsilence.no-ip.com/cam/2004022903/2004022903.html

Not bad huh... Doesnt take long to generate the thumbnails on my P300 either.

Now to just make a "Host" page that lists all the different .html files :-)

As you can see I'm still getting to grips with how to use the Camera

Whaddaya think?

Cheers

and it's free!
you might want to resize the originals on your links to 640 or 800, they took forever to load & I had to scroll sideways 1/2 a 19" screen at 1152 x 864, they are huge

That is really neat Chill - what a good way to share photo's with friends :)

You got me tempted to set up something similar once I finish re-arranging my OS's.

That's now bad :-)
The Linux screenshot on that website is butt ugly!

I dont have a GUI thought, and I'm not sure how well that app would like being run without a GUI on my www/ftp server PC.

Cheers

I agree - each pic takes forever to load on this useless dialup. :-(

BTW, I hope you have each model's permission to load those pics on the web or you're going to find yourself rather unpopular sometime soon. :p :D

I also agree, even on Jetstream Starter it takes a long time (at 17.1KB/s)

try this then

I'm going to set this up for myself soon, really nice
Cost about $90 but well worth it

Yes, most are about 400kb big when taken at Standard Resolution.

The idea is that my friends etc who want the Pics, can come grab the ones they want. If they want the pic, they're happy to wait the extra minute for the whole thing to download.

And yes, Ive told pretty much everybody who's had the Photo's taken of them they're going online (Mostly they requested I do so, so they can get a copy of the pics themselves).

Looks good.

I dont have Flash installed on my Browser though so it'd be useless for me (I dont like Flash - You can block it :p)

Most of my mates who want the pics are on Dial-Up, so adding more for them to download doesnt seem like a nice thing for me to do ;-)

Aside from that, I dont have $90 :-(

Thanks though
