I'm ripping video off my digital video camera, but there are so many different formats and codecs that I don't know which one to use. for example when I rip some video in Pinnacle studio, pinnacle will play it perfectly but BSPlayer doesn't. what programs do you all use?

I use mencoder, but thats a Linux app, so probably not much use.
Try ripping as mpeg1 for un-compressed, or use DivX or XviD 4/5 for higher compression :-)
Hope this helps

Doom9 (http://www.doom9.org/) is another good site. A little biased towards XviD, but thats ok. Heaps of info
If you wont the greatest chance of playback on other computers then encoding with MPEG1 with mpeg sound.
If your cam-corder has a WDM / MCI / TWAIN driver I would recomend media player classic as it has a VERY simple record interface, but still enough "tweak" options..
