Deipnosophist

A skillful dinner conversationalist B-)

Nothing topical grabbed me today, so its whimsy time again.:p

Cheers

Billy 8-{) :)

Re Susan's circumspect comment about the "Friday ritual"
in the string thread, WFTWE is coming up for its 100th
episode soon and I was testing the water to see whether
it had outstayed its welcome. It was only meant to last
a few months, but it is a labour of love and I enjoy the
challenge. Apart from the regular readers who occasionally
comment, do any lurkers have an opinion yay or nay?

Laura

I've commented only occasionally, but am certainly a regular reader.

If that makes me a lurker, I say: Keep up the good work.

It's nice to know there'll be some Friday fun...

Certainly an interesting read sometimes. Though I can't see myself using any of the words in a sentence anytime soon. :p

I would definitely have to tend toward extreme "Yay", the world is a
little light on whimsy of late.

And, unless it was an extremely dry dinner, it would be a very sophisticated
Deipnosophist who could pronounce his calling after dinner.

Well as you know i am here lots when the time can be spared,

That is when im not shoveling the crap to get out of the hole i have fallen into with my actions or words i seem to always repeating, i am not articulate enough to have foot constantly in the mouth.
i have learnt not to touch the fan, i learn to take the heat, so as not to spread the afformentioned stuff from the fan and spare the entire population with the mess i seem to be constantly in.
so i guess my Deinosophist aspirations are on hold till i learn a little more finese :D

I enjoy your words of confusion BT, i see no harm in posting it, if some one objects, then they dont need to click on it to read it, its their choice.

going back to my tunnel of biodegradeble products.
:p

I am mostly a lurker and I say yay. :)

Actually it would be very nice to have these words' etymology. 'Sophist' I know but 'deipno' I haven't a clue. Just a thought. I am a wordist myself.

mark c
28-02-2004, 12:42 PM
Well just had a look.

Deipnon - greek for dinner

Sophist - master at his craft, wise/able man. Currenyly degraded to 'sophistry'.

Well Billy! I think you (should)'ve bought yourself another labour: Offbeat, posers & twisters, eg, WITLOAPOS.

R2x1, very tidy. :D

The benefits of exercising the mind, especially outside of work, is too often negleted.

The closest I come to being a Deipnosophist is the pre-meal conversation with others while waiting at the fish and chip shop. :D

Keep up the good work Billy.

Cheers. :)

I think WTFWE is a pompous load of trollup where someone tries to show off their "intelligence" by using complicated and ridiculous words out of proper context.

Some people need to get off their high throne and get back to the real world.

Its not even remotely humourous and is basically showing how a pompous englishman is trying to become a moderator on this forum.

Press F1 Rules - http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/thread.jsp?forum=1&thread=40651

1) Keep it friendly: If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything. If you feel a thread or post is offensive do not respond in kind.

The author is also so high and mighty he doesn't see the need to prefix his pompous threads with Off Topic:. RTFM (http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/thread.jsp?forum=1&thread=40651).

Thanks for that marvelous piece of posting there stu. Does the number after your name have any direct correlation between how many post-pads you will make?

Billy T

OK OK Aroc, I invited Yays or Nays, anticipating both, no problem with that but in attempting to insult the writer rather than comment on the feature, you have (perhaps unintentionally) been both insulting and amusing.

Briefly, I don't prefix OT because WFTWE has been around since the very early days of this version of the Forum and members of all abilities are readily able to remember that it is always OT. New members don't seem to have too much trouble either.

Just keep it friendly; remember it is just one post per week that you don't have to read, yet it seems you do read them if you get so het up about it.

WFTWE is intended to supply useless information and fun, I don't pretend to haul all these obsure words out of my head, I research most of them which is where I get my personal satisfaction, and I also enjoy the flights of fancy that the threads sometimes follow.

Now settle down and give your liver a break.

Cheers

Absolutely correct there Murray ;) but, Billy seems to have side stepped the question of a new series.

A query of my own, if I may, is AROC an acronym and, if so what? Cleverest entry gets 1st prize; most creative use of language gets 2nd prize and first correct entry gets 3rd prize.

Well, ORCA is just too easy.....and the sentiments sound more like those of a minnow than a killer whale, I thought.

So presumably it's something much cleverer....

However AROC also a gene in salmonella typhi and e-coli, and that must be the true derivation you seek, as it would cause some irritation?

Can I have first prize?

Laura

2nd pop

Angry, Ranting, Outspoken & Crabby...

(But nothing will beat Godfather's gene, I think)

And no, aroc is not an ACROnym for anything.

Murray P

Goddie you forgot to mention Aspergillus which is a little closer to my interest than the outcomes of e-coli et al.

SOOoooo without further adooo 3rrrrrd prize goes to - ta da ta daaa- Godfather 7 times over. I'll have to find you something bronze coloured, will brown do? like a peanut slab..... I mean (I think that effort deserves more than a chocolate ><<))'> ).

1st & 2nd being subjective will take more consideration. Keep e'm coming in the meantime tho.

Cheers Murray ;P

PS. BT, sorry to barge in like this. Maybe you should judge the 1st & 2nd prizes unless, of course, you wish to participate ;) in which case you would be eligible for a prize.

PSS. I needed to act quickly on this one otherwise I suspect we would have got the other 13,193 results from Google.

Billy T

Nope, you go for it Murray.

I won't enter though, due to the obvious conflict of interest. Besides, my talents don't appear to lie in that direction, the best ideas I could come up with were A Ropable/Risible/Rheumy Old Codger which don't really cut it with the other entries.

Cheers

Yes I agree. Seeing your output I think that maybe it could be regarded more autobiographical than anything ;) Mind you, a few others could lay claim to it as well.

I am a little surprised that no one, to date, has attempted to put together WFTWE words into some alternative context (thought you would be perfect).
