help needed for defrag

Hello all. When I try to do a defrag nothing happens apart from the computer making crunching noises. I have left it trying for up to 20mins but still nothing is shown in the '% done' column.

Help on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

And you may need to leave it for an hour or so to see if it makes any progress.

I find that booting the PC in Safe Mode to run defrag works best
