How do I check if my hdd is powering down when I set it to in the bios setup.
Does the os (Slackware9.1) have anything to do with it???
Cheers

As I understand it, for power manangement to work you need two things:
1. compliant BIOS
2. compliant OS

This is not an area that I have investigated much with Linux but I know power management is not turned on by default in Redhat 9.

Linux mostly ignores the BIOS so setting it in the BIOS probably won't do anything.

The /sbin/hdparm can be used to set the spindown time. Have a look at "man hdparm", its the -S option.

But it can be a bit of mission to get it actually spinning down because there is almost always something running, eg syslog.
