to get a linux machine to share files in the network neibourhood of windows.. you have to install a samba server riight?

i did some configuratoin.. but all i get was localhost in my workgroup.. and nothing can get shared even when i had already created a profile in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file

any one got any ideas??

There have been a few people wanting to set this up on PF1 over previous months.

Check the history :-)

Otherwise, see:
Lemme know how you get on.

Once you've got it sorted, its brill!

There's another user on PF1 who's covered setting up Samba with Authentication.... Not sure who sorry :-/

Ok - as with anything, once you edit you must reload it.
Edit smb.conf to your liking then "service /etc/init.d/smb restart" and that will shutdown Samba and restart it with the new settings. You need to tell Samba what directories to share (located down the bottom of smb.conf) and who to share it to as well...

If you want to do users in Samba, you need to add users to the smbusers list and then add their passwords to smbpasswd. To do this:
adduser -k /etc/samba/smbusers username
passwd /etc/samba/smbusers username

The machines can ping eachother and everything?

You might find this guide helpful - it was written by a PressF1 forum member called John.
