View Full Version : Hard drive size's

Hello every one

I am thinking of getting new HDD for Xmas.

At the moment I have a 10 GB Hard drive (Windows ME says I have 9.30GB, but I know that is not true, because of formatting etc….)

So I am just wording if I can still get a 20GB or 30 GB Hard drives??? Or can you only now get a 40+ GB hdd :O :O

What I want to do is duel boot Win ME (which I have now) & Win XP (Win ME first then Win XP last.)

There are suppliers out there, but for the price of it you'd probably pay more for it than a 40GB drive.

To dual boot, just install ME first, then install XP and it'll set it all up itself (Microsoft can do some things right, and Doze + Doze dual-boots seem to be pretty okay :-))

You might be hard pushed to find a new 20 or 30gb hdd these days Stu and even if you could they probably wouldn't be much cheaper than a 40gb. Grab a 40 and use it for your primary drive and the 10gb as secondary. ;-)

You will need to check what the max size hard drive your computers bios can handle. If it cant handle 40GB then you either have to try and flash your bios to upgrade it, although it sounds as if your computer is quite old and this might be more hasle than it is worth. Another alternative is to use a USB2 external drive and then you can use as big a hard drive as you like. Unfotunately, you will not be able to boot from the USB drive but you can still install your dual boot system on your 10GB drive. I have just bought an 80GB drive from XP Computer Warehouse for $119 + GST.

Stu, Pricespy list quite a few retailers who stock both 20 and 30 gig HDD's, but the price of all new HDD's has jumped up over the past few weeks.

If you are purchasing new, it will pay well to compare prices, as you can pick up a 40 gig for around the same price.

Anyway - Have a great xmas :-)

Won't find new 30Gig, but 20Gig still available but are becoming rarer. I know only 2 of my 4 suppliers have them.
The previous posters gave you good advice, go to 40 gig as price difference is small.
I would say your Mobo should recognise the 40Gig OK if it recognised the 10Gig as one of the "barriers" found is 8Gig.
