I have just replaced the black ink cartridge on my Epson Stylus C41UX Printer and it will not print without colour as well. I ran out of colour along time ago and the black worked fine on its own until it ran out.

Is there a way of tricking the printer into thinking there is colour left in the empty colour cartridge?

Not that i know of,however (and if this is frowned upon then can one of the mods slap me on the hand and ill never mention it again) i can get ink at much lower prices then the stores in town.

Leave a msg here if your interested.

The ink for my printer is pretty cheap anyway, the colour cartridge is $44 so I dont think thats bad its just that I cant afford it before christmas and was hoping I could just use my new black one till then.

Take the colour cartridge out and give it a shake and then put it back in.

This will trick the level indicator in the cartridge to think it is full agin and you will be able to continue printing with the black cartridge.

You do have the option under printing preferences to have colour or black. Try putting a dot just in the black option and see if that works.

Works for me, did you restart the printer to reset the low level fault.

If it still says replace cartridge then believe it.

Epson have added a memory chip, which stores the number of pages you have printed. I hear that there are ways to reset the chip. I used to like Epson printers. I don't think I would ever buy another one. :D

I have tried everything everyone has suggested and still can't print in black only. Looks like I will have to wait till after Christmas until I can afford a colour cartridge before I can use me printer again.

Have a look at these sites: http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml and http://www-ink-refills-ink.com/1epsonchipresetter.htm . No guarantees, :D.

Also, for a local supplier of this this gadget (http://www.inkjetrefill.co.nz/).

Has anyone used one?

Its nearly christmas so instead of socks and a tie see if you can get one from santa/friends/family. Or you could buy a new one.
