View Full Version : Can't delete a file

I've got a winamp file that keeps saying "access denied - cannot delete file - close down any programs or users that may be using it and try again" everytime I try to delete it. Also, the computer gets real slow and sometimes crashes when I try. Anyone have an idea as to how I can get rid of it?

What OS are you using? Have you tried booting into safe mode and deleting the file from there?

There is a quicker way. Run -> Cmd

Navigate the system to the folder containing the file using commands:
cd directoryname (change directory)
cd .. (goes back one directory
dir (directory listing)

Then find the file you wish to delete.
Now type in:
del /q /f "file name.avi" (inlcuding quotes if the filename has spaces).

If that doesn't delete it, kill the explorer process and try again by running command prompt from the run box in the Task Manager again. To start explorer again, just type: explorer.exe in the run box.

That should work for Win2k/XP.

assumming it is an AVI file? & you are using Win XP?

1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"

Assuming its an avi file.

Before you go editing your reg.

Make a new folder, drag the offending avi into it,delete the entire folder.
