I'm using Win XP Prof, IE6 (all latest patches applied - minus SP1 which is a whole other thread)

I can't delete my favourites. I get this error no matter what I do:

'Cannot delete [folder name] it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the files and try again.'

I have tried to delete the favorites in two ways:
1. Delete through IE6 > Favorites > Organise and then highlight and delete each folder/favorite.

2. Gone into Documents and Settings > then my username > favorites and tried to delete them manually with IE6 shut.

Whats going wrong?

My desktop machine (98SE) has no problems, just my XP :-(

I take it you have administration privilages to do it ? Another suggestion, try restarting into safe mode and delete there.
remember too that you must leave the Favourites folder, and under that the Links folder intact. Clear out the contents but those two folders must remain.

Yes I have admin privileges on this account

I'll try the safe mode option...

Try renaming the folder folder then delete. I thought IE just made a new one when it restarted.

it may also be a sharing violation.

Okay some things to note:

if you have NTFS partition you may need to have the right permission

item >right click > properties > security > make sure your username is allowed there and or possible under advanced nutton listed there for owners if that makes any difference

additionally you may still require a restart because the system may think its presently being used and as such cant be deleted until its not used e.g. restart this may be for both NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 while the paragraph above this one is for NTFS>

Thanks to everyone for all your ideas on how to delete them...

I tried everything and finally got to delete them...

Heres how:

1. I restarted my computer
2. Didn't use IE or Tabrowser (my other browser)
3. Deleted them manually through Documents and Settings
4. Imported my favourites from my Desktop (98SE machine)
5. All working beautifully
