The index.dat file in the \windows\temporary internet files\ is running at over 2 Mb. (Win 98 se.)

Anything I try to do to this file results in a "File in Use by Another User" error message.

Could somebody please tell me how to either decrease the size of this file, or carry out a delete allowing it to autopopulate from scratch again?

Thanks

Jammy

There is a PressF1 FAQ on this topic which should help:

FAQ #9b How do I delete my hidden index.dat file? (http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/thread.jsp?forum=1&thread=21835)

Note: the FAQ page will take sometime to load, but it will eventually turn up :)

I use a RAMdrive. Change you location of your temporary files to this location. Every time you reset your PC, it is deleted. Windows file recovery system automatically recreates it anew.

With additional tools you can point your cookies and history files to this location as well.

I have discussed this on a previous post and works for all versions of Windows, including 2000 and XP.
