It's a great time saver. That's why some dot matrix printers had a "bidirectional mode". Saves the time for carriage return in each line. :D

Bet no-one ever produced a digital device that printed in a spiral (see "Phaistos Disk").

However an interesting Unicode proposal (together with a drawing of both sides of the disk) is at: http://unicode.org/pending/phaistos/Phaistos.pdf

But printing in a spiral is one of the "standard" PostScript examples ... the output looks quite nice. You can even have the type size diminishing as you work in to the centre. :D
