I did something which I hope will turn out well...
I bought an Athlon 2600+ and combined it with DDR400 RAM - Athlon 2600+ would more normally go with DDR333 RAM. The idea being that when 3200+ or higher gets cheap enough, I can upgrade without having to change my RAM again.
The system seems to be running quite fine even though the memory gives no indication that it is being "underclocked" - it seems to be running at 400 - is this a fluke or normal?

The memory will work "up to" a certain speed. If the processor doesn't need all its speed, that doesn't matter. If the processor expects data before slower memory can provide it, that's when you get problems.
