View Full Version : Reinstalling WinXP Pro onto new computer.

In the next few weeks I will be assembling my new computer & want to use my Win XP Pro upgrade version as the OS.
I will be removing XP from my current PC & reinstalling The original WinME so I can dispose of it.

The big questions are:
What sort of problems am I likely to encounter regarding product activation?
Can I expect to get a mesage from MS saying "Sorry but you can't use it again"?
I want to be prepared for the big day
I have legitimate copy of Win98 & therefore meet the criteria for using the upgrade version.

All comments or ideas will be be appreciated.

Cheers Steve

You can still use the upgrade option as long as the OS you're upgrading from is not on another PC...

You may run into some "fun" with the people on the telephone, but you should be okay...

Im not too sure though, Ive never actually done it myself... :-)

if you activated it only once six months ago (someone said 20 days), you got a good chance of doing it again.

if you got error message, you have to call MS. if they are skeptical, you have to argue with them.

Thanks Mike, I should have let my fingers do the walking :8}

The 09 number I saw was on their website & obviously I didnt look hard enough as there is a wellington number in the local phone book too.

I rang the local branch & the chap there said it shouldn't be a problem so long as I remove XP from my current PC.
He said If I have any problems activating my XP to ring the number he gave me.

When ever I have installed xp pro (upgrade or fresh) it asks if you wish to activate now then if you follow the options and select the right country it will give you a 0800 number where you activate the os without talking to anyone but it does involve a lot of key presses and the hash key on the telephone oh have a pen and paper ready it will read back the activation code to you, but if you do have problems ( because this copy of xp has been activated before) you will need to talk/convince somebody in microsoft that what you are doing is legit.

Good luck
