windows xp
pc company 17" monitor

my desktop is desplayed in 1024 x 768 but some how the start up has switched itself to 640 x 480.

pc company monitors 'click' in and out when playing games and switch to 640 x 480, which may have some how caused the change.

how can i change the start up back to 1024 x 768?

Sorry, a little unclear in my mind to what is wrong. When your computer starts up, it arrives at your desktop finally. Is the desktop not at correct resolution?
When windows starts up, on the boot screens, it has it's own resolution. Your settings only take effect when the desktop is loaded.

my desktop has the correct settings 1024 x 768 but the boot screens have switched themselves to 640 x 480 - originally they were 1024 x 768.

I doubt it - usually boot screens are displayed at 640x480 or possibly 800x600 (I'm not sure about that one).

What's probably happened is that your screen has forgotten the display extent for 640x480, so I'd suggest that next time you restart modify your monitor settings to fill the whole screen again (width and height adjustments), and it should look back to normal.

If not then I think you'll need explain your problem clearer...

The boot screens in "ntoskrnl.exe" are low res as Mike says.
These are set in the system file and not discrete images, so they will not have changed.

Depends what you are referring to as "Boot Screen" I guess?

long shot here...........

set your res to 640x480 and adjust the monitor so the desktop fits the screen. (may need to do it for 800x600 as well).

Another long shot, you don't have a game set to run on startup that will only run in 640 X 480
