After a massive system blowup scandisk created and saved a huge bunch of these file types. Are they safe to delete?

Unless you want to try and recover anything. They are parts of files that would have otherwise been lost.

To my understanding you canít recover things from .chk files.

Yes you can recover data from .chk files, but you would only bother to try if you thought you had lost important data.

You open them in a text editor and look for any words you recognise. If you find something you want, save it with a name you will recognise to a folder set up for the purpose (e.g. "recovered files") then open with your WP.

I would check only those that are of a reasonable size as small fragments are not a lot of use to you. I recovered 90% of a lost report from chk files and it was enough for me to rewrite it with minimal effort.
