the os is win98 se, in windows explorer i can often see additional "shadow" drives for C HDD or totally new drive W. What does it indicate? the computer (amd duron 1.1, ram 256) has just been reloaded from scratch and it was doing before too.

did you format the drive??

I'm not sure what you mean by "shadow" drives. When does this drive "W" appear? Try rephrasing your problem for our limited imaginations. ;-)

(The fdisk question ... use "FDISK /STATUS" from DOS. What does that show? Though I don't think partitioning is the problem).

If your hard disk is compressed (using DriveSpace or DoubleSpace) it will create a second "host" drive that is visible in Windows - I don't think people use that utility these days with the size and price of modern hard drives.

Was a good util with my old 162MB HDD running DOS 6.2 & Win 3.11 :D

Need more info!

I know exactly what you are talking about because it has happened to my Win 98 (1st edition) computer as well. I have no idea why it does it but it seems to have no effect on the computer's operation so I just ignore it.

Yes, you are right it does not seem to affect any operation.

Still would like to know what you mean by "Shadow drive". Do you mean that another Drive letter appears which links to C:?

The Fdisk/staus is as follows

Disk Drive Mbytes Free Usage
1 39206 1 100%
C 39205

It has been a little while since I last used the Win 98 computer so it is hard to remember, but looking at the folder tree in Windows Explorer a W "drive" would sometimes appear (sort of like a ghost :p). If I remember correctly it would be underneath the CD drive or thereabouts. If I tried clicking on it I *think* nothing would happen, that it went nowhere.

It was a bit of a mystery, but like I said before I just ignored it.

Did they have their heads under arms, or rattle chains?

Vanessa does the same..
Bless her cotton sox, not that the computer has cotton sox. (how does Vanessa keep her feet warm you may ask?)

When looking in the file manager, there is sometimes a drive "w" that is (by memory) a non exsistant drive that has no content, and tends to apear after a do things with the CDrom. It is just a minor annoyance, and like many things in resent time, it is simply best ignored. Clicking on the drive letter icon produces silly errors.

Yes that's right, for example there are 2 C drives one with normal icon and other one with different icon...
