how can i ping to see if a email server is working?

Open up a command prompt (Run> command (or cmd for NT-based PC's)

type:
ping pop3.ihug.co.nz

replace pop3.ihug.co.nz with your pop server.

smtp works too.. but realise that the PC may be up, while the mail software is not!

it works..got response..
then why are all my 6 email clients not responding by saying "servers not responding" both to sending adn receiving..
i got soo annoyed so tried 5 different onces to see if the first one was stuffed..

but apparently they all stuffed?

its pop3.quik.co.nz and smtp.quik.co.nz

Quik is known to have frequent mail server outtages

if its a outage..this is the first time ever since i joined with them that this had happened...i've been with them since august last year

i surely hope it is a outage..coz if its not then grrr
