My daughter has a Mitac p233 that she purchased from the uni admin where she is studying. We got it home and formatted then installed w98. Everything was running ok for ages, then she finds that when booting a message comes up just after 'Verifying DMA pool data' which says 'Disk I/O error. Replace disk then press any key'. Also, while it is doing this you can hear a ticking sound like it is doing a ram count. It makes this sound repeatedly. That's as far as it gets.
Any help appreciated thanx.

Usually an indication of hardware failure - could be drive, cable, I/O card or motherboard (if with integrated componentry).

Seek specialised testing to establish the fault then consider options relating to warrantees.

Tried checking for a floppy in the FDD or a CD in the CD-Rom drive...?

Most common cause of boot-up problems...

Also, if the bios has lost the hard drive settings, this can happen as well. Go into BIOS and check that the drive is correct there.
Then it is most likely a file corrupted/missing which is caused either by software, or a failure of part of the hard drive.

I think you are right. I removed the drive, what a major getting these small cases apart, connected it to our box and tried to boot, as master of course, it's a dud.
Thanx
