Hi...Just been reading that XP comes with a restore option built in. If so, how does that restore compare with popular image makers like Ghost? Or does it only restore back to the initial bare bones install. And does MS limit the number of "restores" available?

As you can tell, I'm trying to prepare myself for a change from 98.

Hi paradox. I think what you are talking about is System Restore. Your create "Restore Points" when ever you want (you are only limited by the size of our hard drive as to how many you can do). They take what is called an "Image" of your computer and can restart right back to when you first installed Windows XP or to when you had all your software installed. I am not an expert on this but I have used it many times and it has worked perfectly for me (but on the odd time I have had to reformat as I really messed up XP). So, I do recommend it. Here is an example:

You install software and then delete a file that has to used to run it. You can't reinstall it (for reasons) and you think you are screwed. As long as you have a Restore Point just after you installed the software and BEFORE you deleted that file, your computer will fix the problem.

Also, reverting your computer back to the "Restore Point" is very easy. Just use the "System Restore" .exe and it will log you off your account, put everything back, restart and put you back it your account. Very painless. The process takes about 5-10 total.

Hope this is what you are looking for. If not, try:

Hi Paradox

The System Restore that comes with XP (and ME) is a great tool. You can restore back to a point, whether 15 minutes ago or 2 weeks ago when a program or system change you have made has gone pear-shaped. It will only undo whatever changes have occurred since and does not affect your documents or anything else that was on your system prior to that restore point. The number of restore points you can make is only limited by the total file size limit.

If I could just add to what the good folks have said. XP holds aside a bit of you harddrive, to accomodate, the system restores. This can be increased or decreased as you see fit. XP on my computer, holds 4195mbs.

as has been said it does work really well.
