I have a photo of sixty-people in a group.

How can I create an outline of the picture so I can create a key to name the faces, 1 to 60, then print the index in B&W.

I can down-load the picture to my PC from a Kodak picture CD.

TIA. Peter.

A high end graphics program could do it, but for simplicity, economy (and speed) use a pencil and paper.
Trace the outlines, scan the tracing into the document and add the numbers and key.
Or is that too low tech?

The problem with most affordable graphics programs is that they would really need a tablet input device to allow manual manipulation, a mouse is too hard to control.

I am assuming that the people are not spread out, but grouped in ranks, so its a hard call for a program to decide if thats Mary's arm or Bob's ear

Thanks for that suggestion Godfather.

Now, where can I find a Shareware Pencil?

We keep our shareware pens & pencils in the old wooden pencil case I had many years ago at school

You could use maps, but you have to get the coordinance around the sixty heads, with 0,0 being from left,top e.g. so 10,20 would be 10 pixels from the left, 20 pixels down from the top

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN">
<html>
<head>
<title>60 people</title>
</head>
<body>

<img src="people.jpg" height="260" width="428" alt="" usemap="#people" border="0">

<map id="people" name="people">
<area shape="poly" coords="1,1,1,50,50,50,50,1" href="george.htm" alt="Geogre">
<area shape="rect" coords="50,50,100,100" alt="Mary">
</map>

</body>
</html>

In the example above, if you click onto George you would go off to a page about George, but if you put your mouse over Mary the name "Mary" would drop down, (Mary would be down and off to the left of Geogre)

With "poly" you can keep adding coordinance and get all types of strange shapes, even a shape of a person if you have all day to work them out

Depending on what graphic's programs you have available.

You could import the photo and save a copy of it under a new name, eg: index.

Some graphic programs allow you to insert text, this is what you might need. If you have available or can get to a computer that has PaintshopPro ( I will use PaintshopPro as the example here as that is what I have in front of me to refer to), you could open the image there, on the toolbar click the Text Button, by clicking that you get a + on the picture, move it to where you want the text, click, that will open a box, type in your message, click ok, that will super impose the text on the picture, you can then drag and resize to suit. Repeat as required.
