View Full Version : CNN and BBC spirited away

Now here's an odd one.

I suddenly find two of my most frequenly visited news sources, www.cnn.com and www.bbc.co.uk, give me a 404 - page not found in MS Internet Explorer, specifically on one account in my XP Pro system.

Other browsers work fine with these sites; and MSIE brings them up fine in my "alternative" account or in my wife's and daughter's accounts on the same machine.

The failure is only in my main account, only with MSIE and only BBC and CNN.

Can it be political interference, deriving from the Current Great Unpleasantness in Iraq? Or is it pure coincidence that these happen to be the two sites affected?

How was it done? And how can I get rid of it?

No great sweat as I prefer Mozilla or Phoenix for most purposes anyway; but sometimes I flip up IE for sheer speed of launch; the others do take discernibly longer.

I'm just interested to know what or who might be responsible.

Anyone else encountered anything like this?

Just started happening at the weekend, and on Saturday, I also contracted a Hawawi worm, which seems to have snuck in past Norton AV; I only found it when running a complete NAV system check. Did a clean one on Friday, so it can't have been there for long, and doesn't seem to have done any damage. Maybe a couple of .mpgs of no account were reduced to zero-length files, but I can't even be sure they weren't faulty in the first place.

Is the disappearance of CNN and BBC a side-effect of the worm; or something completely different?

Has that account got a nanny to protect you from offensive matter?

Maybe your bookmark entries have been corrupted. Have you tried typing the URLs for these sites? Or accessing them through the links from a google search?

http://64.236.16.116/ is CNN.com

http://212.58.240.120/ is BBC.co.uk

If something is stopping the domains from being resolved, these WILL still work.

A nanny? Surely you jest.

Or you're not aware of my continual pushing of a liberal stance on Net censorship.

That account's seen far worse stuff than anything on CNN or the Beeb :-) (Few dead bodies, though, I must admit). One of the first things I did was to check out a couple of classic porn sites and rotten.com to see if anything else was being blocked.

Anyway; the disappeared sites were working on MSIE in that account till late last week.

If it's a nanny, she's a very selective one, with particular media/political sensitivities; and someone else employed her and snuck her in through the scullery door when I wasn't looking.
