When I shut down my Computer it stops half way through the shut down
process. iT is then necessary to shut off the main power supply.

If you run Windows 98 SE then you need the Win98 shutdown patch from Microsoft.
Win98SE patch available from Win98 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp)

Hi BJ

If you are not using 98SE, there is a simple solution contained within the Win98 help files/trouble shooter accessible off the start button.

In essence, you disable "fast shutdown" which may seem like a contradiction but it allow the computer to shut down faster and more reliably.

Cutting to the chase, if you want to try this, go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter, select advanced and disable "fast shutdown".

Worked for me, W98 original.

Cheers
