Im running Redhat 7 (got it with "Linux for Dummies") and when I start up it asks for my username and pasword, get past that, but I dont know what to do next, I have the desktops KDE, GNOME, and Games... how do I load these. Linux for dummies doesnt tell me

I know this is a simple matter but I just honestly dont know what to do next.

Type "startx". That will get the X-window server running. If you're lucky, that will bring up Gnome or KDE.

I have no updated to 7.2 and I tried "startx" but it doesn't work, is there a different line for 7.2?

you'll need to type this:
su -
to become root user, and then type:
init 5
Runlevel 5 is the GUI level, before that you're likely on Runlevel 3.

init 6 will reboot
init 0 will shutdown (Halt as Linux calls it :-))

That didnt work too well, it started starting programs but when it got to wine it said "failed" in big red lettering (well maybe no big but certainly red)

may the 404 be with you

Did you actually install the X Window system? You can't run GUIs without it. It should have asked for your monitor type, and check that it worked. The fact that your system starts in the black screen mode suggests that you didn't install it. (I'm pretty sure that my RH7.2 started by default in Gnome, and I had to turn that off myself. :D

I would recommend waiting for Red Hat 9 to come out. It'll be out in a week or two - looks very flash so far :) http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=3119
