I have recently upgraded most components of my PC, except for the two Hard Drives - 10gb ATA33 and 20gb ATA66. Is there any significant speed advantage in upgrading to a newer ATA 100 or 133 model?

Am I disadvantaged in having both the ATA33 and 66 drives on the same IDE channel? Someone mentioned that both drives will run at the slower burst rate????

Having an ATA33 Drive like CDROM on a Hard Drive that is ATA 66/100/133 will drop performance, usually when both drives are working at the same time.

How much of this is noticable? It's probably less significant but there will be a performance drop caused by a bottleneck in the cable.

most cd drives run pio mode not ata33. dvd's however are usually ata66.

having an ata33 hd on the same ide as an ata66 hd shouldn't cause it to slow down. i have yet to find one that does. however its still possible to get a sowdown. (assumeing they are both on an ata66/100/133 ide)

that all depends on what speed the ide channel is. eg is the does the motherboard have ata33/66/100 or 133 ??

The motherboard is a Gigabyte VIA KT400 chipset which supports all of the speeds i.e UDMA33/ATA66/ATA100 and ATA133. I have the two Hard Drives on the primary channel and optical drives on the secondary (DVD Rom & CDRW).

When I upgraded the MB/RAM/CPU & Video (GEO4 TI4800) the salesman suggested my older hard drives will slow my new system down, perhaps trying to squeeze more cash out of an unsuspecting buyer?

yes the hd drives will be a bit slower than the new ones. (how much slower will depend on models).

with such a nice/fast system its a shame to use an old slow drive with it. get a nice fast 7200rpm drive. it won't make much difference if its ata100 or 133. you certainly will notice an increase in speed.
