Tut tut, it was just your ISP, we have been in ChatF1 with no disruptions for over half an hour now, and ChatF1's server (farr.net.nz) is in the USA.

You don't think that if the USA got 'upset' at Iraq that good ol' Bush would cut off access to American Servers right? I mean that would mean no more Hotmail!!!
No more CNN (that's American right?)
And how many people use CNN for their daily news?

Hello brainstem?! nope nobody home....

The internet is a fully redundant system, not a little box sitting in the white house where politicians can turn on and off sites....

You shouldn't make fun of my ignorance and stupidity...
You just make me doubt my own ignorance and stupidity even more :p

Just a question though - where does the fibre optic cables that join NZ, Australia, Hawaii and USA all end up at the USA side of things?? does anyone know?

Also if the internet goes (the USA) then it will be only some sites which are hosted here in NZ & maybe sites in OZ that we all could access.... e.g. NZ herald, NZoom etc...

The USA is the main backbone for the Internet... look what happened when the twin tower got destroyed some people in different counters could not access the Internet…...

There are heaps of NZ sites that are host over in the overseas…

I guess it depends on what end of the cable you are at! :p

Yes there are a lot of different sites that are hosted in the us, but get real guys, apart from having a verry negative effect on the US economy, there is not a magic little button labeled "cut off the internet".

I have no clue as to where cables start and stop. One thing you can do is to check out Neotrace. Type "Neotrace" into Google.

If you use this program it will allow you to trace all the servers you go through to end up at a particular server.

Agreed!!!!

Herds of servers in heaps of Countries. If ALL the USA servers die then the Internet will still be around.

If the worst comes to the worst you could always use Googles Cache - that's pretty good...
Although I very much doubt all America's servers would die - don't forget schools would have their own servers, and corporate companies, etc. Even if the power went out, most of those servers are on a UPS of some sort or another...

The Internet when first invented (ARPANET) was designed to be a system that was fail safe during times of war.

Communication is the name of the game.

But even the USA can't cut it off.

Elephant

OK... USA dead....

Servers live in th UK for example. Wherever you have a phone line out you will be able to connect.

If someone bombs both Auckland and Wellington and you can't PHONE anyone in Christchurch or Dunedin then there is a fair chance you won't be worried about the Internet.

You might be more worried about whether the local New World, Countdown etc is open. You might be more worried also if you don't have a roof on your house.

No it was not just my ISP as I could get to any place at all in NZ but nothing outside it. I am not reall that stupid.

But if you look at the posting times you would see that it was only out for about 1 to 2 minutes.

Enough to disrupt the file I was transferring.

It does a loop from california, down to Fiji, NZ, OZ, the other end of Fiji, and another point in California.

The 2 points in fiji are linked, and hawaii is in there somewhere too. Also there is a new access point planed in San Jose, California. I'm not sure where that will link into the rest of the southern cross system.
