It used to be that Domainz (http://www.domainz.net.nz/Domainz.asp) were the sole source of names and you could sign up for one through a third party. The reason for the third party was that you couldn't just get a name and shove it in a drawer (so to speak) but had to have it pointing at a physical server somewhere.

The simplist way to get a domain name is to:
- Work out what you want to use as the backend for your site - html? asp? ColdFusion? php? (ie static pages or one that accesses databases)
- Find your host (making sure they support your chosen language)
- See if you can register for a domain name through them.

As regards .com v .co.nz there are advantages to using a .co.nz. Was looking for Carlton Hire recently. Couldn't find it quickly through the search engines so did a domain name search (http://www.searchnz.co.nz/domains/) on Carlton. Finally gave up and rang them and they faxed their price list which had the domain name on it. http://www.carltonhiregroup.com. Brilliant guys! So easy to find (not!)

If you want a .com, it's cheaper to use an offshore provider eg godaddy (http://www.godaddy.com). For an NZ provider, I use registerdirect (http://www.registerdirect.co.nz). They give you free parking / redirection, good user control and 10 pop3 email addressess against your domain, for the annual registration fee.

I feel that last post was a little misleading. It's not "10 email addresses" at all.

Its INFINITE email addresses that can be forwarded to anywhere, including 10, 10MB POP3 MAILBOXES also provided with the registration.

I might add that the servers for register direct are right here in CHCH, so all traffic is local.

BTW.. i just added another domain to the collection.
registerdirect rocks!

Hi all

I agree with Mary H. Have a look at Freeparking I have used a number of offshore providers and none beat Freeparking for speed of service and overall helpfulness. They respond rapidly to help queries and show a lot of patience.

On occasion I have made a stupid programming mistake the guys at Freeparking have simply gone in and fixed the problem—then emailed me to explain what was wrong.

Depends on what you want the domain name for Businesses or personal uses??

You can buy & host your domain name here:

I work for them if you want to go with WebStarters e-mail me at stuartw77@hotmail.com

Hope this helps

I bought a .co.nz domain (well technically, I rented it for a year) through Nucleus (see earlier post) and have found them excellent to deal with. The domain registration was 39.95 for a year and they give me a fully serviced 40 mb (unlimited sub-domains and email addresses) for 14.95 for four weeks (this 4 weeks business seems to have crept in to a few places lately - a sneaky way of lowering the monthly rate cos there's now 13 'months' per year). All up this works out at about 80cent a day, which is nothing really. I'm certainly happy with the setup.

Thanks. I am just wanting it for a personal site. Sort of a hobby.

I am still at school and cant afford much, so im looking for something cheap.

I am also looking for web hosting, but they all seem too expensive for not very much.

Im looking for about 15mb+ for $10 or under a month.

You'ld probably be best to use a free hosting site like www.orcon.net.nz . That gives less space, but it's free. Even 80c /day adds up, and I'm sure you can find other things to spend money on. :D

You can get 10 MB for free at Orcon (http://orcon.net.nz) & you can redirect your domain name to it.

where have you looked for hosting???
Have a look here: http://www.netguide.co.nz/isp_directory/index.php?directory=hosting

I dont like Orcon, i am with it at the moment, and my ftp thing keeps screwing up with them. I can only upload like, 2-3 things at a time. extremely annoying.

I suspect that they have it so that it is difficult to add to the drive during maintanance.

I note that the important end (the webserver) just keeps going and going!

I have bought my own .com from www.digitalis.com.au Easy to deal with. Cost AU$17 per year with up to 100 subdomains and email addresses. I just use it for redirecting my email and website to my ISP (Paradise). They also do hosting but a little more expensive.

I did alot of searching and found this was the best deal going. Well, suites me in any case.

Good luck Richard

Yeah thats pretty much what i do with my 2 domains. (3 if you count Dyans which is registered through me to avoid an additional domainz admin fee)

There is just one problem in doing that on the cheap. While pointing the domain at the server, legitatly provides a fully working domain, using the invisible frame based system that lets you host a domain on free space without their concent has one or 2 things that dont work. Favicons don't work, they have to be in the parent frame, which is provided by registerdirect. Also links like www.millerton.co.nz/outdoor.htm don't work, so bookmarking etc can be messy. The said link is living at http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/chchgig/outdoor.htm and thats what gets bookmarked.

Once i get the above site finished to the point that i am happy with it, i seriously expect to get it hosted legitamitly, probably taking advantage of registerdirects $100/year hosting deal.
