View Full Version : Putting the floppy on the tabletop

I would like to physically separate out my floppy disk drive from the computer case to my tabletop. If I used screened cable between FDD connectors would I be able to use the floppy with a 2m cable, without data problems? As the data transfer rate is low I don't see cable capacity being a problem.

The floppy spec will allow about 80 centimetres (32 inches) maximum. I would suggest that you disconnect the floppy, get a USB repeater cable and buy a $30 USB floppy. I think you might have a lot of trouble getting 2 metres out of a floppy cable.

You might get away with it. It's only 500kHz. The signal and earth wires alternate in the cable, so screening shouldn't be needed. 8" and 5¼" drives had provision for terminating the cable ... I don't know if 3½" ones do. Results would be best with termination.

Why not try it? I wouldn't use an arbitrary 2m cable ... it would be better to use "enough" length.

wow, just over six years for someone to respond to the initial question!

Where did this get dredged up from :)

I didn't note the date.
Our "mills are slow, but they grind extremely fine". Presumably Biff was searching for something interesting.

BIFF just had to drag up one of Press F1's very first posts for his first reply on the new forum. :p

Nice one, BIFF, you fooled Graham. :D

Goodness, when I read the subject line I thought this was something to do with the Goon Squad visit to Dunedin, but then I remembered the floppy was put on a bar, not a tabletop. :o

I wonder _if_ anybody would ask again......

My 9yr old brother knows about 3.5" Floppies, hasnt everused one though.....

My 4yr old brother knows of half-size CD-R's better than floppies. I think he's seen a floppy disk... Cant be sure though....
