World-Net (http://www.world-net.co.nz) Unlimited 56K @ $20/mth

Kame

I assume you are talking DSL. World-Net limits speed for different types of things you do. You'll find P2P programs are restricted quite a bit that downloads are poor. Unlimited is offered but restrictions are in place.

It's an ok ISP to go with if you aren't into FTP and P2P.

My mistake, didn't see 56K but there are cheaper ISPs offering unlimited for less than that.

Snap (http://www.snap.net.nz) "unlimited" plan.

It's 280hrs guaranteed. AFter that they may start locking you out for 10minutes every 2hrs.

Im with Ihug, $24.95 (I think we can apply for the newer Lower rates though...) and we get 250 Hours a month with 5 free Emails (Not aliases that forward it all to one.. But actual emails.. Better than what Xtra were doing last I knew of it!).

Yes, That's a "Must have", as Ihug had probs about 3 years back when you had to sometimes try for up to an hour to get online during the times of 6PM to 9PM!!!! They're all better now and havent had a failed Dial-In in about 2 years :D

Paradise Net/TestraClear(Saturn) cable, 128 kbit/sec, volume allowance 10GB/month (equivalent, rated on some formula with a "cheaper" count for NZ access. I've never succeeded in using it all: I only rated about 6.5 GB over Dec/Jan last/this year). Above that, if I ever get there 2c/MB national 20c/MB int'l.

It's part of an Internet/TV/two-phone-lines package which costs $135/month. Intenet+one phone line only is priced at $82, so I guess the 'net component is $65 or less.

Very reliable (they had a 10-hour dropout a few months ago, due to a server problem that took them some time to diagnose, apparently, but most of that was in the early morning).

Argus

OT: The TV service, excellent from Saturn, has now been Sky-ised and gutted. About 1/3 of the theoretical 99 channels are missing altogether (the set-top box skips over them), and about another 1/3 have the same dreary movie promotions. They took away Turner Classic Movies, and I can only get it back if I pay! But I still get charged the same fee.

Same as argus.. except i often come quite close to my 10gig allication, and i dont have cable TV, so i pay $108 for 2 phone lines +Cable modem
5 mail boxes, fixed IP, and they seem to like people running servers.

Thanks, Clueless, for giving me enough for a pair of "simultaneous equations".

Where i = cost of internet and p = cost of one phone line.

i+p = $82 (T-C website)
i+2p = $108 (Clueless)

Therefore p = $26 and i = $56.

All figures approximate, because of package discounts, but the internet service appears lower-priced than I thought.

Clear. 150 hrs per month for $14.95. Unlimited would be no good here especially with teenagers around, nothing would get done. We only have one phone line.

Well.. If I were to look into cable.. Im pretty sure Id go over then 10 gig PM, even with P2P apps slowed or blocked...

What with younger sibblings all wanting to use neopets and what-not.

What other ISP's apart from MaxNet offer flat-rate jetstart?

(Hope Im not hi-jacking the thread too much.. May need to start a new one)

Here in Greymouth (i'm not at home) Dyan is using snap.net.nz...
$24.95/month, and it sucks@the moment.. We've been having ongoing problems getting connected, and speed is dropping fast, allthough modem conection speed looks fine (when it connects) the actual speed that pages load etc gets a bit slow...
OK i'm spoilt cause i'm used to cable, but even for dial-up this isn't what it should be.

Go to http://www.netguide.co.nz/isp_directory/ and you can find all the ISP's and prices, which is a bit easier than reading all of these. One thing puzzles me though - why would anyone use Xtra??

Woof

After years and years iHug/Ginge is a Dog so I finally put him out of his misery and beefed-up Clear to Home 150 at $14.95(?)/mth max 150 hrs (which is 2x or 3x the hours I need/want)

I have always enjoyed at least one 'back-up' ISP to facilitate performance comparisons - including Xtra until they wanted $2.50 per mth minimum fixed; that's when I walked away from them for good !

Ginge was forever having "first local router status" issues and even worse, plus too many disconnects but worst of all was the lack of bandwidth - it stuttered and stammered causing all sorts of problems (try and hold a netphone conversation with that sort of fragmentation !)

Early days but Clear 'has' to better than that crap iHug puts out

Now my e-mail (mainly pdf) screams in (old "56k" modem but a goody !!!!)

Now that I've sorted that out it's time to look at giving Vodafone the big flick, too - coverage is zilch here at the office and at the motel MAF put me in when they spray dear old aunty PAM. I've also sent Genesis packing - every bill took too much effort to check/verify payments etc so I'm about to see how Mecury do it. Now if only I could change City Council's so easily - I'm sick of these Hypocrites out West ....

PS: obviously a ruthless year ahead ........

666.29hours/31days=21.5hours/day
when do you go to sleep?

Paradise 250hours/28days for $20
This equates to just under 9hours a day.

8hours work, 8hours net, 8hours sleep; recipe for a good day!

i go wif Clear 150hrs for $15 a month. incl 5 real email addresses.

if u hog the line for ages. then go for jetstream starter or equivalent. better than purchasing a 2nd line and a ISP charges when jetsctream starter is about the same price (i think). only extra cost is the adsl modem.

56k paradise $20.00 for 250 hours every 4 weeks.
I use about 30 on a big month.
Also have an xtra account for $5 / month just for my emails and for emergencies when Paradise is real slow, which is hardly ever.

If you are using 30 hours or less internet per month then you are paying far too much. Actrix (http://www.actrix.co.nz/domestic/dialup/index.php#cyberbyte30) only charge $9.95 for up to 30 hours per month usuage - even less than that if you take out a six or twelve month subscription.

Thanx Susan, but Paradise works for me - I rarely have connection problems and after all, it's still only 72 cents a day! less than 2 snail mails or half as much as my morning tea scone! I changed to Paradise for the service more than the cost. Xtra was either really slow or impossibly slow and the local crowd I was with for 5 years, The Net, in Hamilton, had problems with all their systems and then seemed to disappear altogether, so the cost is not everything and is really insignificant anyway.

andy

39.95 per month + telecom's 29.95 ~~ 70

and with a 10 gig cap which I hate. the speed is ok, and its stable.

in the earlier days, It seemed that I could not check my online usage(jet start). now I can check my online usage at telecom page after a few tries. then I got an history view of my 128k dsl usage, I had never gone beyond 10g, even during the holiday period last month.
