I am running Windows 2000 professional. When using the defrag option, there are (presently) 5 files that wil not de-fragment. One is 511Mb and is called hiberfil.sys. Others vary from 1Mb upwards. Any help as to how I can force all the files to defrag. Thanks

hiberfil.sys probably defrag, because it is the file used to store system information when you put your computer into Hibernation mode.
The other files that won't defrag are probably system files too, but if they're not, try running scandisc to see if the files are corrupted.

Are you in Safe Mode??

Have you had a look through the FAQ at the Defrag one?

Hiberfil.sys is a file that cannot be defragged. Read here (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prkd_tro_ldtg.asp)

Turn off hiberation before defragging.

And scandisk has never existed in an NT based system.
