View Full Version : formatting

I have installed WinXP. I am unable to format a floppy on A drive. All other functions work ie, being able to delete and transfer files to the A drive. Anyone know what the problem is?

What happens when you try to format the floppy? Is there an error message or does nothing happen? More info gets quicker better answers.

When formatting the floppy make sure you aren't seeing what's on the floppy.

Best way to do it is, if in Windows Explorer make sure the floppy drive isn't hilighted or anyone of it's subdirectories. Right click the floppy drive and select format and then do what you want. In my computer right click the floppy drive and choose format.

Thanks for the query. Nothing at all happens. The normal format prompt is listed umder the file menu.

I don't use XP so I'm unlikely to be able to progress this. Sounds like the format facility has been disabled. I'd investigate the Windows help file and take a look at formatting to see if such an option exists. It would be a bit crazy to provide that but crazy never stopped MS before.

Are you logged on as Administrator? Some functions are not available unless you are.

Is the disk write-protected?

Have you tried formatting from the CLI.

Did you try a second disk?

Dewar's original post said he could write to the disk and delete files. That would suggest that the disk is OK.

Oops, was skim reading again. :8} Nasty habit. Ignore previous suggestion.

Thanks all for the info;
Floppys ok, no write protection, I am administrator and everything else ok.
Seems like some link from the prompt missing.

In WinXP click Start, My Computer. Locate the floppy in the pane and right click the icon. One of the options will be Format.

Does this work?

There is a "Format..." line but clicking on it does nothing, no message, nothing.

Open up a Command Prompt (Click on start, run, type in "cmd" - delete quotes) From here type format a: and see if this works.

like on a vcr have you clicked the little tab from down to up or up to down (one is right)
