View Full Version : invalid boot file

I am running Win XP home edition on a month old computer.
In the last couple of days it has been coming up with an error on startup.

It gets to "boot from CD" which was normal. the screen changes and then I get "Invalid boot.ini file. Booting from c:\windows\"

After that it goes OK.
The system is dual booting with win98 but this option has become unavailable.
It will not allow me to reinstall XP from its CD.
I have tried "system recovery" from a point 7 days ago but it says there has been no changes made!!!!!! HELP

If it is new, why not let the supplier sort it out? Trying to repair it yourself might possibly end up invalidating your warranty unless there is a clear hardware reason for the fault.

If they think it is a self inflicted injury they might expect you to pay.

I am also curious as to why it would want or try to boot from the CD instead of the HDD.

the machine is proberly set to try to boot from cd (bios setting) which is fairly normall (just like booting from floppy).

however seeing as they have dual boot (which i assume they did themselves) they will proberly have to pay for the repair.

it sounds like something with the boot manager has gone awol.
