View Full Version : Survey - How often do u format your PC ?

06-11-2002, 09:17 AM
I usually format my machine once a year if my PC is working perfectly fine, if not .. I format as needed... :D

06-11-2002, 09:29 AM
Only when all the small problems start to get really anoying or something bad happens, which is currently about every 12 months.

It was closer to 6 months when I Windows was my only OS.

06-11-2002, 09:50 AM
Probably once every 1 or 2 months :D More often if I've fiddled too much, less often if I've finally got things working smoothly. I formatted 3 times yesterday :p

06-11-2002, 09:51 AM
twice a year is standard for windows users isn't it? :)

06-11-2002, 09:58 AM
Used to every 3 months religiously.

Never now cos the CD drive is poked.

06-11-2002, 10:28 AM
Windows NT 5.1 partition = format every three months
RedHat Linux 7.3 partition = never format (why would I need to :D)

06-11-2002, 10:50 AM
98SE .... 1 x 12 months or less if I can get away with it :)

06-11-2002, 11:10 AM
Every year or so would be my avourage, this year i formatted twice, once cause things were getting a bit screwy, and a month later because my HDD spat the dummy :_|

06-11-2002, 11:14 AM
about every 3-6 months. I install and delete alot of software which can cause problems sometimes. have a partition to save all my important stuff and a restore disk I made of all my commonly used programs and drivers.

06-11-2002, 11:42 AM
I use to be a regular formatter but i havn't in about 3 years now.
There is no need to. If you have a problem fix it. As simple as that, why waste time with formatting. There are so many applications out there that help you fix and clear up things in windows anyway.
Of course this only applies if you know how to fix most things, which i understand doesn't apply to everyone.

Never, at least not since Win98SE was clean installed 3?? years ago or whenever.
Cant see the point if regular housekeeping is done to clear out detrius, defunct dlls, registry entries etc.
I will admit to copying a backup once when there was a bug that I couldnt find the answer to.
I try out 2 or 3 shareware progs. a week on average for a day or 2 then uninstall, move stuff around every now and then with PM, so there is the potential for rubbish to accumulate. You just have to keep on top of it :)

06-11-2002, 12:24 PM
Only twice in 3 years - once because dial up networking wasn't working and the second time because my brother totaled my data on the HDD :_|

06-11-2002, 12:31 PM
I only format it when I want to recompile my system using Linux from Scratch :-P

When I first got my laptop, I played around with HEAPS of stuff. So I ended up formatting it about 10 times within the first month coz it was a real test machine at the time.
The record was 3 times in one day when running Win98SE after having it about 3 months, I kept locking myself out. I'd managed to get it to allow only user on a select list at boot. Cant remember how I'd done it, but I'd like to (Hint Hint... Anybody wanna help out?)

I have had my own PC for about 4 months now and it runs MINT!
Family PC usualy gets done about once every 4 months, but I havent been keeping it in shape (Removing that darn spyware, there was 131 instances about 2 weeks ago, after having not checked it for 25 days!!!).
So that needs doing again.

At the moment, on all the PC's, I'll be doing a format about once a week to once a fortnight, coz I've been sorta trying to play with linux, but with the network not working in RedHat 8.0, I usually go back to doze after the weekend.

When I had Windows 98 or Me about every 3 months....
Windows 2000 or XP it should be okay for a year.

Debian GNU/Linux .. not required even between different OS versions ;)

Mac OS 10.2 .. Shouldn't need continual reinstalls/formatting either

06-11-2002, 01:10 PM
I have formated and installed my desktop 6 times in one day .(Just the OS not all software.)

i Format and reinstall when ever i get bored.i get bored with XP and put 98se on, then get bored with windows and install Redhat 8.

i format Anything from 1day - 3months or then i get bored.

06-11-2002, 01:27 PM
Once or twice a year

06-11-2002, 01:40 PM
Only when I replace a hdd since I moved to win2k and XP and then only if I think the machine is getting slow, In the days of win 9x at leat 3 or 4 times a year.

06-11-2002, 06:15 PM
I've just done the 98se box because I got my own computer and don't need all my crap on the family PC.

My XP box I've done once in the past two months, mainly because I screwed around playing with all the new things.

06-11-2002, 06:49 PM
Only when something disasterous happens.....

You guys who do it for fun or out of boredom are freekin nuts! There must be more to life than that!

Never! PC over two years old with ME and never had to format it and too scared too just for the sake of it. Runs sweet with regular downloads and uninstalls of lots of stuff and regular maintenence. First PC to, didn't even know how to start and stop it when I got it. Really just a case of try all the buttons until something happend! :)

06-11-2002, 06:58 PM
My better is hoping to build a new computer, mix and match the bits, we will definatly reformat because she doesn't want her sons rubbish, and he doesn't want hers, and someone is getting the original HDD. I spose it's not totally needed, but its definatly the easy way to have 2 clean machines

Only ever done one format on this 4 year old PC and that was almost a year ago. Will give it another one once the new PC is up and running sweet.

For Win95 /98, once every 2-3 months. Since I upgraded to W2k, only once since upgrade about 2 1/2 years ago and that was because I was bored.

I'm with Roofus & Terry

Good houskeeping = 3 years+ and performance as good as ever it was.

However, if you want to fiddle with shonky software, make an image of your clean setup and just dump it back anytime you feel the need. Saves all that reconfiguring and finding drivers etc, and 30 minutes or less sees you running with a fully optioned but virgin install.

Why format more than once?

Beause I play with things so much it used to be once a month but that has gradually phased out to every 3 to 4 months. Its nice to run a clean system especially seeing as I install and uninstall a lot. I reformatted last weekend as I wanted to multiboot 98se, ME and XP but only got as far as XP and ME due to the "couldn't be buggered really" factor.

At work I'm formatting 1 to 2 computers a day. Usually customers systems ( I work for a retravision store selling the things ) 99% of them are corrupted due to viruses/spyware/Bad installs of programs and just plain pushing the shiny buttons to see what happens. Another main problem is people downloading all the "neat" free programs from the net that try to take over the system and the good old porn diallers. I try to clean as much as possible and I run fixit utilities 4.0 from Ontrack through the machines but most often a reformat is the only way to get things running fully again.

I also have to reformat the display systems every 30 days as we can't activate XP till its sold. Luckily all are sold with a recovery CD which makes my life bliss and the good thing about these CD's is they are a full version of XP with just the addition of all the drivers etc required.

>I work for a retravision store selling the things

been there done that :(

often a format reinstall is way faster than repairing it. thats wher partitions come in so handy.

i reinstall on average once everuy 6 months. usually a clean and repair keeps things going for years but when theres a mogor stuff up with a program its quicker to reinstall.

Or a high-speed CD-R/W, 48x12x52 for only $120?! Cant go wrong there!!!

InCD from Nero is good too, great big floppy disc.

Wtih W98 I seem to reformat about every 4-6 months (when things stop working properly). Recently bought new pc and XP and have reformatted that about a dozen times so far trying to get rid of the bugs. When I get things going properly I create a drive image so the reinstall only takes an hour or two instead of the best part of a day next time.

2 - 3 times a year. Mainly because I install something - press a wrong button and say S*#+T. or delete some thing from the Registry that I should'nt have.

07-11-2002, 12:15 PM
Install SP1 for XP, and also, create a system restore point. Many XP and also ME users dont realise that they can. And so for the likes of un-installing WMP9 Beta, you HAVE to use system restore coz there's nothing in Add/Remove Progs.

Small price to pay for a TRUE BETA tester. Otherwise, wait for the real thing!

Never have in 18 months. I'm with the ppl that just do regular clean-outs and maintenance.

Besides, not familiar enough with re-installing.

Seems to run sweet, though I like the spring cleaning aspect of it, seems like a good idea. :)

That's where registry backups come in very handy. Your computer should be creating one each day and all you need to is restore the last good copy. Saved my bacon a few times. :D

4 years on W98 no worries. I'm a keen tweaker(not overclocking) but have always managed to find a way out of strange places, except for a unreal encounter with Winfax. I have recently purchased a CDRW(thank God) and made a backup of my current HD setup 3 weeks previously which came in VERY handy.
So does this break my own record?

08-11-2002, 09:44 PM
Only if I have to I use GoBack and fix it with pestpatrol also diskeeper and window washer along with ad-aware and reg cleaner so my system runs well usually for around 2 years or so

Lately, about once a month, but that's because I have been trialling the different options available by Microsoft & quite frankly, I don't really like any of them. Windows 98SE would be my favourite. It seems any MS OS has an issue with some hardware or peripheal device, or a really annoying software glitch.

Before my testing, once every 4 - 6 months because I just cant help experimenting with my PC's settings & I've learnt how to really stuff things up well the first time, but the good side is, I've learnt how to fix it too.

Now I use Ghost, so restoring an image of Win98 takes 2 minutes, WinME takes 3 minutes, Win2k takes 4 minutes & WinXP 5 minutes. Linux is a different story. It never needs reinstalling, but I am trying as many of the different distributions that I can get my hands on to see which one I like the best & which kernel has the best support for my hardware "out of the box". I really like the desktop theme that comes with the PC world bootable PC World Knoppix CD * I will use it on my final choice.
