Actually I have an even better idea, let stop all the unnecessary motorways being built further don the country ]:), and use the cash to finish the ones started in Auckland 30 years ago :D

Why do people get so upset about devolopment in other areas?

I had a "conversation" with a drunk West coaster about this, he was bleating about how so much $$ was being spent on Auckland roads, i pointed out that devolopments only happen in a few places at once, and everyone gets thier turn, i then pointed out how many millions had been spent on the last couple of years on Arthers Pass, which involved some very challenging engineering...

He continued to argue how hard done by he and the west coasters were. My thoughts on his belief system at this point should not be published in this kind of forum!!!!

What a load of mumbojumbo cobblers. Someones been watching Came A Hot Friday too much.

I can't believe they stopped work on the motorway because of some make believe crap that some idiot Maoris made up.

NewZealand is well and truely stuffed

Only in New Zealand....

Can you see Aussies stopping a development that benefits everyone, on a similar "warning" from Aboriginies?

Political correctness gone way too far.

Not that I want to start a war here, but when will people (or more precisely politicians) learn.

I personally can’t thing of any other county that would stop a $60,000,000 motorway because of imaginary monsters ?:| :O :^O

I don’t think it is for me or you to say there is/not a ‘taniwha’ in this area – can we say with any certainty their is not? I think we all have to respect all cultures a lot more! Especially one which has played a major part of the founding of this nation.

Regarding the industrial dispute, which is affect hospitals in Auckland; the only thing the government can do under the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act is to direct the District Health Boards to seek arbitration in this/any industrial dispute (which they have).

It would also be incredibly rash for any minister to embark on such a precedent. No Health Minister in has ever become involved in such matters (industrial disputes).

Setting such a precedent would simply send a message that DHBs could sit back and wait for a directive from the Minister whenever they couldn’t reach agreement on an industrial issue. (The Employment Relations Act would not allow that anyway)

The only thing the government and the minister can do is monitor the situation and encourage both sides.

Also, concerning the ‘porn issue’ the minister was well within her powers by directing (no pun intended) the Waikato District Health Board not to allow video footage to be shot for commercial pornographic purposes.

There is a clear non-personal aspect to the videoing, involving use of footage for a commercial pornographic film/s.

I think the hospital should have prohibited it on the grounds that they weren't getting royaltys on the birth for profit scam!

Arguably you have a point, I await the day that ‘taniwhas’ appear out of thin air and tell us we should stop building roads :D :D

Mmmm. I think you gentlefolk miss the point. This comes into the same category as escorting frogs or cleansing a new embassy in Bangkok. The Iwi could do LTSA a good turn by holding a ceremony to excorcise the taniwha - say 20 grand. :-)

No the point is respecting ones culture, as you wound want your culture respected.

How would you feel if a department went willy-nilly and built a road over you relatives’ remains or something, which symbolises your culture and/or believes.

The cleansing of the new embassy may not mean a lot to you, but it does for a huge culture in New Zealand. When a Kiwi is released or born a cultural act or attendance is supplemented.

My culture states that I should carry a lightsabre, but you don't see me wandering around carrying a sword covered with phosphorescence. :( :p

Getting back to this whole 'taniwha' issue, after re reading the INL article, and noting the points about the taniwha being responsible for the road accidents; "Maori believe fatal crashes common on the highway are connected to the taniwha of the area..." :O

Surely if these vicious 'taniwha' are capable of taking peoples lives by causing road accidents we should be more cautious of them. ?:|

Now hers an Idea :D ; why don’t we establish a no-fly zone around the area in case the evil 'taniwha' try and attack aeroplanes. Better yet lets have 'taniwha' detectors fitted to all aeroplanes in case the rest of the countries 'taniwha' follow suit and start attaching airborne vehicles :^O :^O :^O, (now if only we knew what they looked like).

If the taniwha are going to cause accidents then those who beleive in them should stop, get out of their cars and go live in all the land they have been given in the last 10 years. The rest of us can then live in the 21st century. I reckons those so called experts must be pi%$ing themselves at the trouble they can cause, all on the grounds of 'culture'. They wonder why there is racism in this country. Its not all caused by us 'whities'.

Hi...

Taniwha to iwi (sub tribe) is a belief unlike many religions for those who believe in them - The name still exists after a very long time, and perhaps some unforseen circumstances could occur near the swamps or river...Say like back in '53 when the the river took out many lives in tangiwhai...

Cheers...

I bet that a donation of several thousand (more) taxpayer dollars to some Maori group will make this "spirit" miraculously disappear.

You watch.

"Taniwhas" to me are just paganisitic mumbo-jumbo. Does this make me culturally insensitive?

Yes it does if I fail to debunk mumbo-jumbo in my own culture.

Mumbo jumbo like monarchism, Christianity, the class system. When we acknowledge our own twaddle I feel we can point out others.

If you dismiss the twaddle in aother culutre you are nothing but a bigot if you cvannot do it to your own as well.

You don't see me coming in here and calling Christianity or any other belief system mumbo jumbo or a scam. So next time, let's not do this, shall we?
