Why do any of the applications in ms office 2000 display the splash screen, open a blank page & then exit the program. I've tried repairing office & uninstalling & re-installing office, it makes no difference. Most frustrating.
I'm running windows98se2.

Thanks

is it an original Office 2000 cd you are installing from, or a copy?

I met this on a Windows 2000 machine which is, of course, not a great deal of help as you are using Win 98 but it might trigger ideas.

On Win 2K we logged in as Admin and installed Outlook but as it was a trial setup didn't register it. All worked with 50 free uses to go. Then we logged in as a User. The splash screen came up then the program exited. As a user we didn't have rights to accept or reject the registration. Logging back in as Admin and registering it solved the problem.

Maybe the registry needs a clean out? Ideas anyone?

This may fix problems with Word.
Go to Start button and click on Run. In the Run box, type winword.exe /a

If Word launches OK, then it is probably your normal.dot file that is bad

To get yourself a new, uncorrupt template, simply close Word and search your computer for normal.dot and rename it or delete it.
When you launch Word again, it will look for normal.dot and create a new one.

Thanks for the reply jim. winword.exe /a opened word ok, but search didn't find normal.dot. There are plenty of normal files for other programs, but nothing microsoft related. any other ideas please

So... is it an original CD or not?

When did this happen? Was it after you installed another program? Have you recently installed MS Project 2000?

Check your copy of Office 2000's CD key: if it starts with GC6J3, then you have a problem. It is not a genuine copy. Take it back to where you bought it and ask for a genuine copy replacement, or report to Microsoft (?).

However, there is a fix (although it may be illegal?):

Uninstall your Office 2K and reinstall it with another set of CD Key known to be good. Search the net and you may have some luck!

Good luck

A search may not find normal.dot, as it may have the attributes of a system file. Ensure you enable any options to show system files.

It is usually in Program Files/Microsoft/Office/Templates
or something similar, depending on your setup.

Look for it explorer it may be easier, it will be there (word creates it when it boots up if its missing, thats why its OK to delete it)
