I want to copy a VCR to avi. I have no experience in copying/editing/compressing video.

My friend has a video capture card, a VCR and Ulead Video Studio 4 (off the PC World CD a while back).

How would I go about copying a cassette to avi. would I need extra hardware? would I need better/different software? How much disk space would it take?

Note the video is 3 hr long. (i heard that avi is 13gb/hr!!!)

Thanks in advance
Dylan

You don't want to convert it to AVI, MPEG, will give you better compression.
check out http://www.tomshardware.com
also do a PressF1 search. for converting TV, or VCR

all depends on which codec you use. mpeg1 is horrible but mpeg4 is so sweet. there are a few different mpeg4 codecs.

Been down this road, more than once ...

Try www.vcdhelp.com as a starting point.

I use 2 options

1) PowerDVD for recording on air TV programs for viewing later. Can also be used to do a quick and dirty VCR tape to VCD conversion. Quality so so

2) For converting VCR tapes to SuperVCD for playing in DVD's an PC's, I use TMPGen, etc to create the MPG2's etc. Lots of time consuming work to get the optimum quality up. But all the details are in the VCD help forums
