View Full Version : Video drivers only 16 colours

I have an old Compaq Pentium 90. The on board video had problems and I put in a separate video card (basic PCI one). I can now only get 16 colours. I have told the computer that the video adapter is a super VGA model and the monitor is super VGA 1024 x 768 (I think). However, when I go to settings I only get the choice of 16 colours.

I have tried swapping from Win95SR2 to Win 98SE. Win98 gives me 32 bit colour ok but it runs like a dog on the old computer (even with 132 megs of RAM) and it fills pretty much the entire hard drive. I suspect the fact that there is only 50megs left for the swap file is what is killing win98.

My question is why does win98 give me up to 32 bit colour but win95 only 16 colours. Note that I would be happy with 256 colours, anything but 16 colours.

You need the appropiate video drivers for your card as it sounds like it is just using a basic generic driver.

First question, any ideas where to get the "right" drivers?

Second question screen shots of what and in what thread?

We cannot advise you where to get the right drivers, as we do not know the make and model of your video card.

Post it back here, or go to Google with it to get the drivers.

It was so easy in the end.

load Dr Hardware and find out the card type (S3trio64V2)

go to google track down drivers

download drivers

install drivers
