MajorGeeks has posted up a freeware tool for flushing the Prefetch log and controlling the Prefetch Parameters in Windows XP. Windows XP monitors the files that are used when the computer starts and when you start applications. By monitoring these files, Windows XP can prefetch them. Prefetching data is the process whereby data that is expected to be requested is read ahead into the cache. Prefetching boot files and applications decreases the time needed to start Windows XP and start applications. Get more info and download from the link below:

Windows Media Player 9.0 Beta Build 2903 released
Microsoft has released a new build of WP9, bringing it up to build 2903. The new build has the following changes:
Personal Firewall issue: If you have a personal firewall product installed on your computer, in some cases Windows Media Player fails to receive content over a network and in other cases the Player may crash when trying to receive streaming content. The problem is related to the firewall software that is not yet able to handle new Windows XP and Windows .NET Server networking APIs. Windows Media Player 9 Series Beta Refresh (build 2800) addresses this issue.

Surround Sound Speaker Setting issue: If Windows Media Player starts to play audio but there is no sound, check to see if your speaker settings are set to Surround Audio. There is a known issue in Windows Media Player 9 Series Beta where the Player may crash when you play regular stereo or mono WMA content while your speaker settings are set to Surround. Even if the Player does not crash, you still won't hear any audio. Windows Media Player 9 Series Beta Refresh (build 2800) addresses this issue.

A new version (build 488) of Winamp 3 has been released to plug a security hole in the application. Here are the details:
Winamp 3 skin files are *.WAL and are automatically opened by MSIE. They
are actually ZIP files with altered extension. They contain pictures and
configuration files used by wsabi (Winamp skinning system).

Wsabi engine is implemented inside wasabi.dll and is designed to provide
very configurable, OS-independant system for building skinnable
applications, quickly and easily (that's the reason why wsabi.dll is 800K

A buffer overflow inside wsabi.dll may occur if
tag is altered with extremely huge value for file PATH (btw, MAX_PATH on
win32 is defined to be only 512B). This can allow the execution of
arbitrary code inside the address space of Winamp. Wsabi filters most non-
printable characters but specially designed shellcode will still pass

Pentium 5 to be released in 2005
News.com (http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-961210.html) has posted an article that details the release of the replacement/redesign of the Pentium 4 will occur in early 2005. Here's a bit from the article:
Intel is working on a major overhaul of the Pentium 4 chip, which sources say will debut in the first half of 2005. Code-named Nehalem, the chip will embody a new architecture that will substantially differ from the current Pentium 4, according to sources. Concepts in the current chip line will be found in Nehalem, but it will contain new, and largely unknown, features such as improved power management that will mark it as a distinct evolutionary step, similar to the changeover from the Pentium II to the Pentium III.

In the meantime, Intel is also working on updates to the Pentium 4. In the second half of 2003, the company will release "Prescott," a Pentium 4 variant that will feature a new security system and "strained silicon," a chipmaking method that speeds up transistors.

AGP 3.0 explained
Ever been mystified by all the talk of AGP 3.0 or 8x and the increases in bandwidth and the such, well be mystified no more as Planet3Dnow has posted up a guide that explains what AGP 3.0/8x is. Here's a bit of the explanation:
AGP 3.0 is the third generation of accelerated graphics for the Intel-compatible computers and will be officially introduced on 11/12/02. In contrast to AGP 2.0 the AGP 3.0 specification isn't just a derivation of an existing standard. AGP 3.0 is incompatible to AGP 2.0 - in theory. However, compatibility can be forced by implementing the "Universal AGP 3.0 Motherboard" standard.
