A good frend of mine used to ring up and ask why the internet didn't work
i'd ask if it was plugged in and everything, and then point out she would have to get of the phone to try the computer.

There was total confusment over that.

She was with i4free, and couldn't get her head around why a "free" connection needed the phone line...

She's got that bit sorted now, and a lot more, but yeah they're out there!

I burned a CD with some multimedia stuff on it for a friend of a friend. He couldn't get them working, because, it turned out, he had a 486 with 8 megs of RAM.

Him: "How come they don't work?"
Me: "You need a new motherboard, CPU, case, power supply, lots more RAM, and maybe a new video card."
Him: "Can you download them for me?"

I used to work on the helpdesk of an ISP, and here's a little gem I saved which have to share. This was one unhappy chappy, but it got us rolling on the floor!

The service that [ISP] [ ] provide is absolutely appalling -

I have an un-paid account that we are refusing to pay because of a crediting
issue with [ISP] over our web hosting - which incidently took 2 to 3 weeks to
set up, for some un-known reason, mainly because none of the staff seemed to
have a clue as to how to transfer our web-site from our old hosts over to
[ISP], it was the most un-smooth tre=ansaction I have ever known, possibly
known to man.

After thinking this was completed, I find out two weeks ago that our
internet trafiic to the web-site is still being directed to our old hosts
server!!!!! Over two months AFTER the account was supposidly set up!!!!!!!

I have since tried to sort out a credit for our account, have spent up to a
week trying to get some one to help me on the phone, NO ONE COULD, or else I
ended up on hold for an intolerable amount of time, and had to hang up after
prior arrangements took president over my time left hanging on the phone
listening to the ****ING CORS!!!! There is only so much innoffensive music
any one can take before it becomes offensive, my limit is approximately an
hour and a half, I'm not sure if it's just the music, or if partly because
my ear is burning off.

I then abondened the idea of the phone, after talking to a woman yesterday
who had just strarted, it was her secound day, she said the staff had been
cut by two thirds in her office, which as you can understand, makes a
****-load of sense to me, given that [ISP]'s policy is obviously make
people wait as long as possible, while you screw things up as much as
possible in the hope that

a - they commit suicide
b - they die of lack of nutrition, whilst on hold
c - they die from radiation poisoning (cell phone user)
d - they die of old age
e - they just give up

I figure [ISP] is a humain company, caring for the community, and has
budgetied heavily on the d option, as the social wait of suicide and death
might be a little hard to bear for the CEO's.

Back the EPIC tail of dispair -

Since giving up the phone option I have tried to e-mail through the [ISP]
site the lovely people at [ISP] help who deal with ac**** enquirys,

I spent over 15 minutes typing out the scenario and went to send the e-mail, [webmail]
I had of course been logged of the [ISP] site for lack of activity due to
taking to long with my enquiry!!!

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I went back to log on, copied the text from my original e-mail onto my new
fresh re-vitalised log on e-mail enquiry page and hit send -


due to a server fault your message can not be sent at this time - please try
again later.

THIS IS LATER, I AM TRYING AND ALL I CAN MANNAGE TO SAY IS
