I am currently getting lots of spam through my personal Xtra account. I haven't signed up for anything on the internet. I haven't listed it anywhere and I would like to know is there a way that I can create a rule in Outlook Express that blocks everyone that isn't in my address book like hotmail.
I have outlook express 5.5 and I receive a lot of e-mail from friends and family along with business relted ones and I don't have time to go through and delete each spam message. They total about 20 a day and they are increasing by about 10 each week.
I have asked everyone that I know have they subscribed me to anything and they all say that they haven't and about 1 year ago there was about 1 every month. I don't want to create another e-mail account because of all the hassle. So does anyone know if you can block messages (or at least) move them directly into the deleted items bin????
If so please post a message and tell me how to block all these annoying messages.

Hey there,

Well, in Outlook Express you can block the sender. Just click on the e-mail and go Message=>Block Sender. But all that does is that it will remove all e-mails from that particular sender and block them from sending you anything. If you carry on for a few days, your spam will eventually lighten off a little though not completely.

There are programs out there that will remove all spam automatically, I believe that a few months ago there was a huge article on spam in the PC World Magazine. Have a look in there or have a quick browse on Google.

You can set up a rule to trash all mails other than those listed as Contacts. Just in case you may receive mail from someone who is not listed as a contact I would set up a folder for all the spam to be diverted to - you can then review that folder once a week (or so) to check that there is no mail you do actually want.

So in Outlook Express:
Create a folder called Spam by right-clicking Local Folders > New Folder... > type Spam > OK.

Click Tools > Message Rules > Mail... > New...
1. Tick "Where the From line contains people".

2. Tick "Move it to the specified folder"

3. Click specified (http://) > Spam > OK.
Click contains people (http://) > Address Book...
Highlight everybody in your address book (click the first one, scroll to the bottom, SHIFT + click the last one).
Click From -> > OK > Options
Change first option to "Message does not contain the people below".
Click OK > OK.

4. Change the filter name to Spam Filter.
Click OK > OK.

All mail from anybody who is not in your contact list will no be despatched to your Outlook Express Spam folder.

Try mailwasher (http://www.mailwasher.net) to filter your email before you download it.
