Windows XP vulnerability
A new vulnerability has been discovered for Windows XP that allows the files contained in any specified directory on your system to be deleted if you click on a specially formed URL. The URL could appear in a malicious eMail, in a chat room, in a newsgroup posting, on a malicious web page, or even executed when your computer merely visits a malicious web page. Gibson Research, home of the leak test, has made up a small utility that will check if your computer is at risk (and protect it if it is) from the vulnerability. You can read more and download the file here (http://grc.com/xpdite/xpdite.htm).

Abit AT7-Maxx 2 first look
TBreak (http://www.tbreak.com) has posted what could be a world exclusive. They have gotten a hold of one of the brand new ABIT AT7 MAX2 (KT400) motherboards and wrung it through it's paces and given it the big thumbs up. Check the review here (http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?id=143).

Video card performance with UT2003
3DCenter (http://www.3dcenter.org) have downloaded the UT2003 demo and checked the performance of 14 graphic cards ranging from GeForce 1 to 4 and Radeon I to 8500 to find out what affect the different cards have when running the demo. Here's a clip:
As the first it is noticeable that above a GeForce3 Ti500 no Frameraten profit adjusts itself more - a over-clear reference to a CPU limitation . However from a pure CPU limitation to to speak, would be just as wrong: Clearly it is to be seen to the GeForce3 and still better to the GeForce2-Chips that behind this CPU limitation also still another due diagram map limitation as it were " schlummert ". With unreal Tournament thus a large CCU is not Alleinseligmacher, but it depends on a balanced system.
By the concrete example of the Pentium 4 Willamette with 2 GHz it can be said thus that for these and all similarly fast processors under the demo of unreal Tournament 2003 a GeForce4 Ti diagram map is completely senseless, if one wants to play without anti- Aliasing and without anisotropic filter. For a GeForce4 Ti makes only one CCU starting from 2.5 GHz Pentium 4 or 2,0 GHz Athlon XP sense. Turned one can say in addition, that for users of GeForce diagram maps not at all all too much to 1/2 with a middle class CCU starting from 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 and 1,5 GHz Athlon XP a larger processor will bring - the armament of the diagram map would be better in such a case.
Check the whole shoot-out here (http://www.3dcenter.org/artikel/2002/09-15_b.php). You will need to use the ever faithful babel fish (http://world.altavista.com) if you want to read the text as the site is in German.

nVidia 40.41 drivers and UT2003 don't mix so well
There have been numerous forum posts over at the UT2003 forum at Infogrames on problems that the nVidia 40.41 drivers have with the demo. Here's one of the official words:
The nVidia 40.41 drivers are known to have visual flaws and performance problems (hitching) with the Unreal Tournament 2003 Demo which are not present in the 30.82 drivers. The issue has been addressed by nVidia and future drivers released by nVidia will contain the appropriate fixes. If you are currently running the 40.41 drivers please either downgrade to 30.82 or install newer drivers when available.
I have experienced this problem first hand with both the demo and the earlier leaked copy, so it seems that nVidia has some work to do on their drivers. You can view all the forum posts here (http://www.ina-community.com/forums/announcement.php?s=4f7dd2ad162bc86b2e034f3ad05652b f&forumid=214).

Disable Windows Messenger In XP
Majorgeeks has posted up a small program that will disable Windows Messenger from running on copies of Windows XP that are not running SP1. For those running SP1 you can remove messenger in the ADD/REMOVE programs utility. This file saves you from having to manually edit your registry to disable Messenger. It has been tested and verified, but it may still be a good idea to backup your registry before applying.

Abit admits PCI problems with VIA based motherboards
Abit has updated their FAQ dealing with crackling noises on Soundblaster Live cards and corrupted data transfer using their VIA based motherboard range. ABIT recommend altering BIOS settings as well as the 3rd party by programmer George E. Breese. here's a cut from their FAQ:
You may meet the following situations:
Copying files from Iomega PEERLESS MEDIA drive to on-board IDE hard disk may lead the computer hangs, or the files may be corrupted.
Creative Sound Blaster Live! (5.1) Series sound cards have a crackling noise while playing music with AT7 / KT7 / KT7-RAID / KT7A / KT7A-RAID / KR7A / KR7A-RAID / KR7A-133 / KR7A-133R / KX7-333 / KX7-333R motherboards.
It is very slow to copy files from on-board IDE hard disk to another disk, the data may be corrupted, even leads the computer to be halted.
Firstly, we suggest you download the latest driver for the devices, and install it. If it still can’t help, please try the next step.
Adjust those three setting in BIOS menu: PCI Master Read Caching / PCI Delay Transaction / PCI Master Bus Time-Out. The recommended value is Disabled / Disabled / 0. However, there are too many hardware vendors and devices that we can’t guarantee the value would exactly meet your situation. Please try some other values if “Disabled / Disabled / 0” doesn’t help.
Using VIA PCI Latency patch may lead to the same result. Many users reported that the issue is solved after applying this patch. You may download the patch here (http://www.networking.tzo.com/net/software/). Please note that the patch is NOT officially released by VIA tech. It was released from a programmer, George E. Breese. The patch is for Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP.

Just give it a go, it will inform you before it does stuff. But if you've got SP1 installed it should be fine.
