Sony to offer both DVD recordable formats
Sony has made an announcement that it will support the two leading DVD formats in a new line of drives to be released that hopefully calm consumer worries over the continuing confusion of multiple DVD formats. As DVD recording becomes more popular there is still confusion over the two leading formats, DVD+RW and DVD-RW which have hampered sales because consumers are un-willing to pay money for a drive that could become redundant as soon as it leaves the store. Sony's solution is to sell an internal and an external PC drive that reads and writes to DVD+RW/+R and DVD-RW/-R discs. The external DRX-500UL drive will be available in November for $US429, while the internal DRU-500A drive will be available in October for $US349. The external drive will come with USB and FireWire ports. You can read more over at ZDNet (http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-957191.html).

WMP9 Beta on Windows XP Firewall problem and fix
For those running Windows XP and Windows .NET Server and third party software, it has been reported that there is a problem with Windows Media Player 9 Series Beta crashing when attempting to stream from over the network when there is a third party firewall software installed on the computer. The on Windows XP and Windows .NET Server machines is that the Windows Media Player 9 Series Beta calls into a new Winsock API for performance reasons. There are some incompatibilities when using this API with existing third party firewall software causing the application to crash. To fix this, use the following workaround:
Workaround: The following steps are intended to serve as an interim workaround for the Beta release of the Windows Media Player 9 Series.
NOTE: Following these steps are not supported and Microsoft is not responsible for any problems that may occur as a result.
1) Quit the Media Player if it is running.
2) Copy the file C:Windowssystem32wmnetmgr.dll to the "C:Program FilesWindows Media Player" directory.
3) Rename the new copy of the file (in the "C:Program FilesWindows Media Player" directory) to wspwsp.dll.
4) Open a command window (click the "Start" button and select "Run" then type CMD.EXE and hit enter).
5) Type in the following line into the command window and hit the enter key:
regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesWindows Media Playerwspwsp.dll"
6) Run the Windows Media Player 9 Series beta and attempt to stream content from over the network.

Windows Media Player 9 hard to uninstall
Some people using Windows ME and XP are reporting that it is hard to uninstall Windows Media Player 9 Series because it doesn't show up in the ADD/REMOVE programs windows, yet it does on Windows 98 and 2000. This, according to Microsoft is deliberate, because they are trying to encourage people to use the System Restore feature of these two OS's. Here's the word:
Windows Me and XP users must rely on a feature called "System Restore" to roll back their Windows installation to a time before they installed Media Player 9 Series if the want to uninstall it. The clunky alternative doesn't really remove all Windows Media Player 9 Series files and could potentially wipe out other system changes.
David Caulton, a Windows Media product manager, said the uninstall issue isn't a bug or mistake: Microsoft intended the software to work that way, and the company warns people before they install the software that it's hard to get rid of it.

Tom's Hardware updates their P4 3.6 GHz picture
After receiving more than thier fair share of flak over the pictures in their P4 3.6Ghz story, Tom has updated his review with a explanation of the P4 3.6 GHz photo and added a new Picture. Here's a snip from the page he added:
Regarding the photo that has been much talked about in discussion groups, Tom's Hardware Guide has never claimed this to be a Pentium 4 3.6 GHz. Instead, the caption reads: "The design of future P4 CPUs will not change. Starting with the 3.06 GHz version (to be launched in November 2002), virtual multi-processing (Hyperthreading) will be supported."

Mozilla 1.2 Alpha
Less than a day after Mozilla 1.01 has been released and the guys over the Mozilla project have released Mozilla 1.2 Alpha with the following changes:
Type Ahead Find is a new feature that allows quick navigation when you type a succession of characters in the browser, matching the text in one or more links on the page. To give it a spin just go to a web page, start typing and hit enter to load the selected link. You can also use it to search for any text on the page by typing / before your search text. Read the full Type Ahead Find documentation to learn about all of its features, prefs and future plans. The feature is not yet working on Mac but we expect to have that fixed by 1.2 beta.
Selection of text in message headers has been partially implemented.
Drag and drop from the message search results window is new.
One of the most frequently reported bugs, "long strings in mail or news header cause scroll bars and attachment window to disappear, making message unreadable" has been fixed. (Bug 91662)
Preliminary XML prettyprinting, similar to IEs default-view for XML is now available. In this release the feature does not work in installer-builds you need to get a .zip distribution. However since the feature for now affects the DOM for unstyled XML-pages it is disabled by default. To enable it, add user_pref("layout.xml.prettyprint", true); to your user.js. (Bug 64945)
On Windows you can now add multiple attachments to a mail message via the Attach File dialog. (Bug 121122)
Major improvements to Mac OS X IMAP mail header download performance. Preliminary tests show about 2000% improvement.
Text zoom now applies to framed pages.
Keyboard access is greatly improved including additional accesskeys for menus, other ui elements and page elements.
Grab it from the link below.
