When working in various Windows programs a message box appears and states "Office Assistant cannot be found - do you want to reinstall".
After reinstalling Office Assistant it works OK until I close down. The next time the computer is operating the same thing happens - ie Office Assistant can not be found.

A solutions would be appreciated

Be happy, that damned paperclip drives me crazy. I can't wait to get rid of it. Perhaps yours has developed a persecution complex.
Are you sure you want it back? Help works fine without it. I would reinstall, turn it off, and leave it off.

Barry,

One of these Microsoft knowledge base articles may be of assistance:

For Office 2000 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q221354) and this as well (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q203689)

Office 97 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q162763)

Office XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q290151)

PS* for something different than the paperclip go under options in Office Assistant and you can choose dancing cats (very cute), majicians, dogs etc instead.

Yes, that sort of sums it up.

PS How could you suggest the cat! They are all incredibly annoying, especially the cat and the dog.
