Can any figure this one out, cause I certainly can't. ?:|

The day before yesterday Freda was 17.
Next year she will be 20.
How can this be so?

I think it may have somthing to do with a leap year, no prizes for guessing even if you do know the answer, cause like I said don't know myself.
Just curious. ;)

cheers merlin-nz ;)

The statement was made on January 1. Freda's birthday is December 31. She was 17 the day before yesterday (Dec 30). She was 18 yesterday. She will be 19 this year (Dec 31) and 20 next year.

it really took google to work that out? to be honest I think this was one of the easiest brain teasers we've had here for a while - mainly cause it's the only one (that I can remember) that I've actually figured out... in less than 20 seconds too!

Mike.

Actually Mike i did figure it out myself in no time then i used google to check if it was right. I then took the answer from the site I found because I couldn't really be bothered writing it out.

Regards
Sam

Oh I did so well! :-)

My IQ is the same as my shoe size (9) but I figured this one out all by myself, for once. True, it took twice as long as Mike, but at least I did it!

Good one Mike. :-) Did you "help" Michal to buy them? :D

Baldy: I thought I'd better not buy him a mouse. I was worried that he might get me a really good fishing rod and reel for next mothers' day - and then take it off me and give me his old one!!

:O Actually, I just remembered that there's still a box of Roses hidden in the cupboard that he was supposed to have! Oh heck!

Hmmm, what he doesn't know won't hurt him though...

OK Sam, the caramel 1s r 4 u and the toffee and turkish delight 1s r 4 me. The rest of you will hafta b quik! :D

Ok, Figure this out!

3 MEN GO INTO A MOTEL. THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK SAID THE ROOM IS $30, SO EACH MAN PAID $10 AND WENT TO THE ROOM.

A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE ROOM WAS ONLY $25,SO HESENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3 GUYS' ROOM WITH $5.

ON THE WAY THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT $5 EVENLY BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A $1 AND KEPT THE
OTHER $2 FOR HIMSELF.

THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID $9 FOR THE ROOM, WHICH IS A TOTAL OF $27, ADD THE $2 THAT THE BELLBOY KEPT = $29.

WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

You would need to apply Kirchoff's Law, and look at it from the other end.

The proprietor has $25, the bellboy $5 That equals $30.
Or, the bellboy has $2, the men $3 (=$5) and the proprietor has $25 (=$30)
Its just that the bellboys money was part of the room rental initially paid.

Ok the man behind the desk has $30 for a room that costs $25 so he gives the bell boy $5 change to take back. The bell boy then gives $3 to the men and keeps $2 for himself.

30-3=27-2=25

Hint: Don't take off $1 for each man but $3 for the total room cost.

Susan B

The maths is wonky:

3 men pay $10 each + $30

Room costs $25

Men are refunded $3 @ $1 each

$25 + $3 = $28

Bellboy kept $2 for himself, so:- $28 + $2 equals $30.

There is no missing $1.

I meant the original question's maths is wonky, not mine! :D

Sam H

I think where people get confused on this one is after they go 3x$9 = $27 they add $2 where they should really be taking it away to get $25
