Detonator 40.41 for Windows XP/2000 Released
nVidia has released 40.41 Detonator drivers for all of it's GPU's and only Windows 2000 and XP. Here is a copy of nVidia's press release:
SANTA CLARA, CA-AUGUST 29, 2002-NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today announced the availability of the NVIDIA® Detonator™ 40 unified drivers for the Company’s award-winning suite of desktop, mobile and workstation Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Detonator 40 delivers a robust suite of software applications designed to extend and enhance the visual computing experience, and gives users more control over their environment then ever before.

You know you want to, so go on and download the new drivers from here (http://nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_40.41).

NVIDIA Detonator 40.41 comparison
Following the release of the 40.41 drivers, VR-Zone has sprinted away from the start line and done up a quick compo of the new 40.41's against the 30.82's. For the test they have used 3DMark2001SE, Quake3, Comanche 4, Serious Sam SE and RTCW and found that in 3D Mark especially they were getting increases of over 1000 3dmarks. Check out the comparo here (http://www.vr-zone.com/).

Nvidia performance comparison between Detonators 30.82 and 40.41 Drivers
Following the comparo from VR-Zone, Warp2Search have posted their own benchmarks with similar increases in speed noted. Click over here (http://warp2search.net/article.php?sid=6521&mode=thread&order=0) to see their results.

Nvidia playing the 3DMark game
It seems that strange things are afoot with claims that nVidia has optimised the Detonator drivers to purely give fantastic scores in 3D Mark to counter the impressive showing by the Radeon 9700 and that the new drivers often make games like Quake 3 darker. Read more on the news over at 3dchipset (http://www.3dchipset.com/).

Hidden features in Detonator 40.41 drivers
NVIDIA BIOS Collection (http://www.x-bios.3dgames.ru/) have stumbled across some hidden features in the new Detonator 40.41 drivers. The features are AGP settings allowing you to play around with the settings of the card, Refresh Rate overrides which allow you to select a refresh rate to override the OS in direct 3d and lastly a temperature control applet for the card. You can check out some screens here (http://www.x-bios.3dgames.ru/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=305) and grab a reg patch to unlock these features here (http://www.warp2search.net/download.php?op=viewsdownload&sid=2&orderby=dateD). This is a Use at your own risk type situation so I would suggest backing up the registry first or setting a restore point in XP.

Fill rate problems in Detonator 40.41
Some fill rate problems have surfaced while benchmark the new drivers that are showing fill rates nearly half what they should be when using 3DMark2002 SE. The figures listed below where from a Leadtek Geforce 4 ti4600:
Detonator 40.41:
Fill Rate (Single-Texturing) : 645.1 MTexels/s
Fill Rate (Multi-Texturing) : 644.5 MTexels/s

Detonator 31.00:
Fill Rate (Single-Texturing) : 1203.7 MTexels/s
Fill Rate (Multi-Texturing) : 2495.2 MTexels/s

Solve for NVCPL problem with new 40.41
Another problem has surfaced with the 40.41 that the NV Control Panel doesn't work if you had installed older Detonators and not uninstalled before applying the new set. To solve the problem, simply delete the two obsolete Files nvrsXX.dll and nvcpXX.hlp in your c:\windows\system32 folder , where XX is your language code. Additionally the file nvqtwk.dll from older drivers isn't needed anymore so you should also delete it.

Nvidia NV30 emulation tool with 40.41
nVidia has developed an NV30 emulation tool that will allow you to transparently run any application that uses NV30 features when using the 40.41 drivers. The biggest downside to this is that the emulation is slow as it is performed on the CPU. You can download the tool here (http://developer.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=nv30_emulation) if you really feel that you need NV30 emulation.

NVRefreshratefixer inf file
If you use NVRefreshrate to combat your refresh rate woes with XP and 2000, there's a modified INF file to get the NVRefreshrate tool to work with the new 40.41 drivers. Grab it here (http://www.fileconnect.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1614).

America's Army gone gold
Americas Army: Operations has gone gold and will be available on a free CD at the beginning of October. The CD is only of significance to US citizens as it will only be available at local U.S. Army Recruiting stations, ROTC Detachments and at other Army events. The CD features all existing downloadable missions and several exclusive levels (Weapons Cache, FARP) in the Swamp Raid and Mountain Ambush missions. For those not in the US the final product should be available for download online.

Hudson and JVC announce new CD copy protection technology
Hudson and JVC have developed a new Copy protection technology called Root encryption technology. The new technology is intended to prevent illegal copying of CD's from the boot sector up, it features special encryption keys which are hidden in software that's pressed onto a CD-ROM and cannot be read with ordinary procedures. The keys are not copied properly when software on the disk is copied to a CD-R or CD-RW disk, thus preventing illegal duplication. A PC that looks for but cannot find the keys on an illegally-copied disk returns an error message. Root protection works for all CD-ROM disks read by a PC, but is not applicable to audio CDs.
