Quake Tenebrae 1.01 released
For all the Quake 1 fans out there, a new version (1.01) of Quake Tenebrae has been released for download. Qwest (http://www.users.qwest.net/~amerrill/quake/) has posted 18 screenshots of the Quake source code conversion to show off the new version. Here's a description of the conversion:
Tenebrae is a modification of the quake source that adds stencil shadows and per pixel lights to quake. Stencil shadows allow for realistic shadow effects on every object in the game world. Per pixel lighting allows you to have fine surface details correctly lit. These are essentially the same algorithms as used by the new Doom game.
Tenebrae Quake can be downloaded from the Official Website (http://users.pandora.be/hollemeersch/blackrose/tenebrae/) or from Fileshack (http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=912). You will also need the Quake transparent water (Vis) patches which can applied using these instructions:
To fix the water, lava and slime issues you may come across in Tenebrae Quake, you will need to follow these steps:
1. Download Quake VIS Patch 1.2 (http://home.attbi.com/~nirv/retail_vis.zip) and VIS Util (http://home.attbi.com/~nirv/vis_util.zip)
2. Extract both zip files into any empty directory and run install.bat. (Overwriting files is ok.)
3. Follow the simple intructions in the DOS window and you should be all set!

UT2003 to get 64-bit porting
AMDzone (http://amdzone.com/) had posted a news item stating that although DOOM III will not be ported to 64-bit, Unreal Tournament 2003 will get ported, which will make a lot of Opteron buyers happy seeing as it is not supposed to run 32-bit programs.

Gigabyte 7VAXP (KT400) motherboard at T-Break
T-Break (http://www.tbreak.com) have posted a review of the Gigabyte's KT400 motherboard, the 7VAXP. Here's a clip from the intro:

The race for KT400 boards is on and we've already looked at the ASUS and MSI solutions- and neither one of them managed to get us excited about the performance. Today, Gigabyte enters our lab with their 7VAXP sporting "AGP 8X" and "DDR400" on its box. Now based on our past experience- Gigabyte has produced boards that have ranged from average to excellent. Lets see if the 7VAXP can finally take off the KT400 chipset with the performance we're looking for.
Check out the review here (http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?id=132) to get the final result.

More AMD Hammer information
Ace's Hardware has found and posted some new info on AMD's upcoming Hammer processor. Check this snippet:
It seems the primary difference between the various Opterons is the number of HyperTransport links and the size of the L2 cache. At the highest level, it looks as though we may see an Opteron with 1 or 2 MB of L2 cache and three HyperTransport links (for an eight-way MP configuration). While the slides dealing with the specific versions do not specify exactly what cache sizes are to be featured, Slide 26 ("Internal Caching") discusses "256K-Byte/512K-Byte/1M-Byte" L2 caches. It's also possible that some of these CPUs, like the 2 MB Opteron, could be introduced at 0.09µ, though this is just speculation.

DOOM 3 will use P2P multiplayer System?
Slashdot have been pouring over Firing Squad's huge wrap-up of Quakecon and come across this piece of info on the state of multiplayer in DOOM III:
From Page 6 of FiringSquad's QuakeCon 2002 Postmortem article:
John Carmack said something at the end of the Q&A about how the multiplayer will be only four players? Tim: After 2 hours of talking up at the podium, sometimes you leave a few details out. Doom 3 multiplayer will be fully scalable. It will be a peer to peer system. We haven't started working on it yet. Tell everyone not to panic - it will be fine. John just forgot to mention it'll be scalable past four players. It's hard to give a hard number because we haven't started working on it yet. Right now we're focused on making Doom 3 a kickass, over the top single player game."

Nero Burning Rom version
A new leaked version ( of Nero Burning Rom is out and available for download. There is no word on the changes, but you can safely assume that it includes bug fixes and burner list updates. You can download this version from the two mirrors available over at Fileconnect (http://www.fileconnect.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1517&mode=&order=0&thold=0).
Handy little hint from one of my regular readers (Ross). If you have an older copy of Nero and you update it, it appears that you won't automatically get the Nero Express listed in the program folder, however, if you uninstall and then install the latest update it will create a program icon for Nero Express.

Nvidia Detonator Drivers 31.00 for Windows 2000/XP
There are new leaked nVidia beta Detonator Drivers for Windows 2000/XP with a version number of 31.00. Here are some details on the drivers:
Today we bring you Detonator drivers revision 31.00 ! The drivers originate from a nForce driver package and the .inf file (windows information file) only supported the nForce chipset based graphics cards. The nForce drivers where fully WHQL certified, unfortunately as we had to alter the .inf file they are no longer that.

We have fixed/modified the .inf file and now the driver is compatible with all NVIDIA videocards. The drivers are dated 30/7/2002.

The drivers have been tested on one of my Windows 2000 systems and work peachy. Right now 3D Mark 2001 is doing nice numbers. Unfortunately we can only bring you a Windows 2000/XP version.
You can download them from Guru3D (http://www.guru3d.com/files/detonator/) or 3DChipset (http://www.3dchipset.com/drivers/beta/nvidia/3xx/nt5/index.shtml).

Slap released
Majorgeeks has a new copy ( of the Slap program, a utility that sends packets back to hackers trying to access your system. The packets are completely harmless but they let the offender know that you're onto them. Here is some more detail on the program:
If your like me you run firewall software that tells you when someone tries to access your system. Sometimes I respond with a few packets of my own just to let them know that I am paying attention. I wrote Slap to make responding to these access attempts easier and more entertaining. Just enter the IP address of the person you wish to slap and click on the Slap button. The program will attempt to access all the ports in the list and send them a packet with a personal message. (The default message is 'Leave Me Alone!') Slap integrates with Black Ice and Zone Alarm! Did I mention it's Free.
Download it from MajorGeeks (http://www.majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=2120) and start sending messages to all those trying to get into your system.

SysMark 2002 is biased towards Intel's Pentium 4
The Inquirer has posted a news report detailing accusations that are being levelled at Bapco's SysMark 2002 saying that it is biased towards Intel's Pentium 4 chips and against AMD Athlon processors. Here's taste:
A PDF from AMD hosted on Van's Hardware accuses Bapco of systematically favouring Intel processors over its own.

The opening barb came with an article by Dean Kent on the Ace's Hardware Forum, where he said there is "something funny" in differences between SysMark 2002 versus SysMark 2001.

Kent said there: "This information tends to lend a lot of credence that the tasks are being targeted to a type of resource usage that would benefit the P4 platform, as has been alleged here by more than one person".
Read the whole report at The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=5092).]
