View Full Version : IP Hardware Conflict

Hi, running NW on a home network, Internet Sharing with a DSL connection, added a new computer, mobo ASUS A7N266-VM, error message..conflict for IP address 192.168..0.1 with the system having hardware address 00:E0:18:79:EP:A1 The interface has been disabled..
Then while that computer is the gateway and has access to the internet , the rest of the network doesn't. Mobo has a network card on the board, how do I change the hardware address?

You don't need to change the MAC address. That is used, but it is the IP address which is the problem. Two computers are trying to use the same IP address. I would say that they both have fixed IP addresses. Normally the gateway (and DHCP server) will use the .1 final octet. If you use fixed addresses for all, fix them. If you use DHCP, make sure that the new one (if that is the problem) does not have a fixed address.

(The MAC address is used for routing after an exchange of messages which azre represented like this (using tcpdump on a linux network): "who has" "00:e0:18:79:ep:a1" has" then the requsetor stores that relationsghip in a table, and can insert the right HW address in the packet headers.)

Thanks Graham, typo in my question, running W98SE not NW.

Just by the way, the first three bytes of the MAC address show that your interface is an "Asustek Intel 82558-based Integrated Fast Ethernet" one. The full 48 bit number is unique.

This is a TCP/IP problem... not an OS one. You might have Internet sharing running on two boxes? Perhaps you put it on the new one, and left it going on the old one.

99% resolution, changed IP addresses to sequential, no conflict now, internet sharing across network but not file sharing from the new computer, other computers sharing but not accessing the new computer.

Will tinker to fix (-:
