View Full Version : External modem

Have recently installed a DLink external. It's quite good, but just one annoyance. If I don't turn power on to modem before I boot I have to reboot to pick it up. Is there any way around this? It's a bit of a nuisance sas I always forget to turn the modem on first.

If its Win2k Pro or Win Xp (Home or Pro) then No. Plug the external modem power pack into the same power strip as the pc.

Not really a fix, but in XP goto 'Device Manager' and <Action><Scan for Hardware Changes>. This will 'install it' it you power it up after booting. (Shortcut: Press the Windows Key and Pause Key together to open System Properties)

One day, I'll learn to proof read what I've written - well you get the gist... :p

Once built some really neat devices for these sort of problems.

Use a standard 4 outlet power strip, with a triac in the phase input.
Triac is triggered by the +5v from USB, via a zero crossing detect opto isolator.

As soon as the computer powers on, the power strip powers up the monitor, printer, modem etc, and powers down on shutdown. As long as the mobo doesnt keep USB power on....
