By some stupid action I have corrupted normal.dot so that when word opens up, document1 and document2 have text on them

I can remove the text but it is a pain .

What can I do to restore normal.dot so that it opens up with blank documents.

Stupidity has its own reward but this is a bit savage so can someone please help. - have tried to solve it by reinstalling but normal.dot remains with text

Trying to remember here - try renaming it and see if a new one is created

Hi, you can safely delete the normal.dot file and Word will automatically re-create a new one when it starts. The new one shouldnt have any text. Select Start-Find files or Folders and enter Normal.dot and select search. Delete all instances of normal.dot then start Word.

In order to save all the other other attributes in your normal.dot file you need to open the 'corrupted' version and delete the text as you've been doing.

Then save the document as a template as say "normal1.dot". This should end up in the templates directory.

Close Word

Locate the directory and:
1. delete normal.dot
2. rename normal1.dot as normal.dot

Restart Word.
